Teaching Assistant, Precollege program Painting from Poetry Job Description Position Overview The position of Teaching Assistant (TA) for Painting From Poetry is now open. Painting From Poetry is a 3-week precollege program for teens who are passionate about art and painting and serious about honing their craft. This is a new program at the College for creative young people looking for an intensive experience with drawing and painting. The course has an interdisciplinary approach, with an integration of poetry, drawing, and painting. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, participants attend intensive painting workshops with a faculty member (9:00am-12:00pm). Students have one 3-hour poetry workshop each Wednesday 9:00am-12:00pm and use their poetry as inspiration for their painting. The teaching assistants attend the last hour of these workshops (11:00am - 12:00pm), in order to provide continuity and then [provide supervision and mentorship for the precollege students each weekday afternoon as the students work on their portfolio pieces. The program culminates in an exhibition in which the students showcase their works for their classmates, families and friends.

Essential Duties Summary Responsibilities:

A TA is a crucial bridge between the professor and the high school students. They are responsible for helping guide students in their assignments which the professor introduces and helps students start. The TA is responsible for helping bring work to completion. The TA also aids students in meeting deadlines. The goal of the program is to learn techniques of paintings, to be able to communicate through the language of art, and to develop work towards the portfolio. The TA should help students achieve those goals. The TA must be able to communicate clearly and punctually with the instructor (when the instructor is in the classroom but also when the instructor has left for the day). The TA will have the opportunity to instruct 90 hours during the summer of 2027. There will be a number of preparatory zoom meetings that the TA is expected to attend. TA should set the bar high, be really present and thoughtful during their workday and pass on passion and positive attitude about making art. The TA will be closely paying attention to the teaching methodology and philosophy of the professor.

Required Qualifications Skills Required:

Requirements of this position are knowledge of painting and drawing basics, ability to speak about art, ability to critique productively and rigorously, always keeping the growth of students in mind.

The TA has to be punctual, responsible and have strong communication skills. Experience working with young people is preferred but not required.

Qualifications:

This position is open to graduates who majored or studied a concentration in visual arts.
