Job Description

Overview The Assistant Teacher assists the Lead Teacher to guide students, according to Montessori methodology, in a prepared environment that supports each student in reaching his/her fullest potential academically, emotionally and socially. The Assistant Teacher is the "right hand" of the Lead teacher and the school director. S/he must be able to take directions from the lead teacher and constantly work on improving his/her implementation and understanding of the Montessori method. The assistant helps maintain the adult/child ratio in the classroom and is always attentive, involved and creative. The assistant teacher is always focused on the student's activity in or out the classroom.
Responsibilities:
In close consultation with the lead teacher: ❧ Review weekly lesson plans and assist with the written summary of the week. ❧ Prepare materials to meet the needs and interests of the children. ❧ Ensure that materials are complete and in good condition. ❧ Support Lead Teacher in the implementation of Montessori goals and objectives. ❧ Share observations and questions relating to student ❧ Provide safe and secure environment. ❧ Maintain the classroom space clean and orderly before the students' use ❧ Ensure that the works/materials are always fully prepared for students' use. ❧ Support in establishing ground rules, schedule and routines. ❧ Prepare a checklist and know the sequence of the lessons and all the components of the individual exercises. ❧ Provide adequate and appropriate supervision of the children at all times. ❧ Assume more responsibility in the classroom with the group activities in music, movement, stories etc. ❧ Meet individual needs of the child. ❧ Provide assistance to the lead teacher at all times to enable him/her to teach. ❧ Inform the Lead teacher of any information coming from a parent. ❧ Convey any issues regarding students to the lead teacher instead of directly engaging with the family. ❧ Assist Lead teacher in the maintenance of the ongoing records including observation notes and conference summary forms. ❧ Assist Lead teacher with the preparation of and participation in parent conferences. ❧ Assist Lead teacher in checking classroom e-mails and telephone messages. ❧ Assist Lead teacher in organizing notes for writing reports. ❧ Maintain ongoing communication with team members. ❧ Report any accidents immediately and prepare a written report stating the details. ❧ Establish professional relationship with staff in order to best meet the needs of each child ❧ Protect privacy and confidentiality of children and the families. ❧ Support the mission and goals of Peace Cottage. ❧ Maintain the classroom space clean and orderly by doing basic sweeping and vacuuming at the end of each day. ❧ Assist in maintaining the school's system of record keeping. ❧ Participate in staff meetings. ❧ Attend parent meetings if requested to do so. ❧ Assist and guide all substitute teachers. ❧ Attend parent education events as well as other school sponsored events. ❧ Support in execution of all sick-child procedures. ❧ Participate in regular evaluation process including classroom observations, feedback conferences, and a semi-annual self-evaluation. ❧ Maintain and improve teaching skills by participating in professional development activities and conferences. ❧ Participate in all school activities designed to make Peace Cottage a productive learning environment. ❧ Attend all staff training and in-service days. ❧ Adhere to the guidelines and policies as established by
