Under the general supervision of the school principal and direction of the librarian or certificated staff member, the Elementary Library Paraeducator supports the operation of the school library and assists students and staff in accessing library resources. This position performs a combination of clerical, organizational, and student-support duties and helps create a welcoming, orderly library environment that supports literacy, learning, and positive student behavior. The Library Paraeducator works with students individually or in small groups, assists with circulation and shelving of materials, and supports the day-to-day functioning of the elementary library consistent with district policies and instructional goals.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Depending on assignment, the Library Paraeducator performs some or all of the following duties: Assist students individually or in small groups in using library resources and participating in age-appropriate library activities. Support student understanding of library routines, materials care, and positive behavior in a shared learning space. Check materials in and out using the district library system; shelve and organize books and other materials according to established procedures. Receive, process, label, and prepare new library materials for circulation. Assist students in locating books and other instructional resources appropriate to reading level and interest. Support literacy-related activities, reading initiatives, and classroom visits to the library as directed by certificated staff. Assist with preparing displays, bulletin boards, and visual materials that promote reading and library use. Maintain accurate circulation records and assist with inventories and reports as requested. Inspect returned materials for damage and make minor repairs as needed. Guide and monitor student library helpers, if assigned. Operate basic office and library equipment, including computers and related software. Maintain the physical organization and cleanliness of the library space. Interact professionally and positively with students, staff, and the public. Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information. Comply with district policies, procedures, and safety requirements. Perform related duties as assigned consistent with the intent and scope of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent.One of the following:
Completion of two years of study (70 quarter credits) at an institution of higher education; or Associate's degree; or Ability to pass a state-mandated assessment demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in instruction; and Experience working with elementary-aged children required. Experience working in a school or library setting preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of basic academic skills (reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic). Ability to work positively, patiently, and effectively with elementary students. Ability to support library routines and maintain organized systems. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to follow directions, prioritize tasks, and remain flexible in a busy school environment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and families. Ability to use general office equipment and computer-based systems. Ability to maintain accurate records and handle materials responsibly. Ability to uphold professional boundaries and confidentiality.Licenses / Special
Requirements Successful Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprinting clearance. Completion of all district-required trainings (e.g., SafeSchools) within required timelines. Compliance with I-9 Employment Eligibility requirements. Working Conditions The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee works primarily in a library setting and experiences frequent interruptions. The position requires sustained attention to detail, frequent interaction with students, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
