The Life Skills Paraeducator supports students with diverse learning needs in elementary and/or secondary settings. This role focuses on fostering independence, social-emotional development, academic engagement, and self-help skills to promote students' success in the least restrictive environment. Under the direct supervision of the teacher, building principal, and Director of Special Education, the paraeducator assists with instructional activities, supports transitions to and from classes, and addresses both positive and challenging behaviors. The special education paraeducator works closely with students to implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and specially designed instruction (SDI), including self-help advocacy skills, behavior management, behavior support plans and targeted instructional programs. Safety Care training may be provided if needed.SALARY RANGE

QUALIFICATIONS:
The special education paraeducator is required to have the equivalent of two years of college or be willing to take and pass a competency test. The special education paraeducator should be proficient or willing to learn computer skills and keyboarding.Desired Qualifications:

Assist individual students and small groups of identified special education students in instructional/vocational activities that have been planned, assigned and organized by the professional staff. Assist in teaching academic skills; Assist in teaching independent living: budgeting, cooking, leisure time activities, sewing, safety, and citizenship; and Assist in pre-vocational exercises: filling out job applications, interviewing, time and management, making change, etc. Assist the teacher in preparation, maintenance, assembling, and returning instructional materials. Assist with or independently tend to the hygiene needs of students, which may include diaper changing, toileting, and feeding students with diverse needs. Assist in securing, preparing and operating instructional media and technology as directed by the professional staff. Assist in gathering materials relevant for student use as directed by the professional staff. Assist in gathering and organizing data and information as directed. Assist in preparation of schedules, charts and rosters for special education students as directed by professional staff. Assist in recording grades and related information on the computer as directed by the professional staff. Assist in maintaining various files as directed by the professional staff. Assist in the preparation, distribution and collection of forms needed by the professional staff. Assist in the supervision of special education students in a classroom, learning center, playground and lunchroom, or where applicable. Escort students from class, if necessary. Serve as a good role model. Reinforce the teacher's directions, activity, or skill to be practiced. Practice and drill as directed by the teacher. Build basic English vocabulary skills. Provide social-emotional support to students, to help student self-regulate. Perform other duties as requested by the classroom teachers or building principals concerning special education students. Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and comply with district policies and regulations.WORKING CONDITIONS
Working area will be in multiple locations depending on the needs of the students. Provide assistance in the educational needs of students. Provide assistance in the preparation and maintenance of educational materials. Provide assistance in the supervision of students including escorting students to and from classes. Provide assistance in the reinforcement of the teacher's directions, activities or skills to be practiced. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students. The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
