YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC) is a public school, chartered by the Inyo County Office of Education, dedicated to providing an effective alternative education for youth who have not succeeded in traditional school settings. Students come to YCSC to earn a high school diploma and to develop a number of personal skills that will equip them for productive, fulfilling futures. Our approach to education is competency-based; students are guided through a process that results in relevant demonstrations of learning through presentations and projects that demonstrate mastery of state standards. Our instructional strategy is project-based and interdisciplinary, with authentic assessments designed by our teachers. Our belief in the value of youth as leaders and agents of change in their communities are rooted in the nationally-acclaimed YouthBuild program model. Students at YCSC are 16-24 year-old participants in one of several local YouthBuild programs in California. Teachers at YCSC provide students with a classroom-based high school curriculum that values the culture and aspirations of youth while understanding the challenges that students face in under-resourced communities. Currently we provide the education program at 16 YouthBuild programs in California, with a teaching position open in the Los Angeles, CA area for the 2026-27 school year. We are looking for teachers who are creative, flexible, progressive, and who truly care about youth who have not done well in traditional school settings.
TUTOR DUTIES
Communicates with course instructors to learn what they expect of students in their courses and what they expect of you as the tutor. Demonstrates academic competence in subject area(s) and ability to build a curriculum. Provides academic support to individual and/or small groups of students for specialized reasons (including virtual support) Assists students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks Teaches skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions Designs and facilitates differentiated and personalized learning goals and activities that follow a coherent sequence, are aligned to instructional goals. Develops and distributes teaching materials to supplement classroom lessons, including study guides Conducts practice tests to track progress, identify areas of improvement and help set goals for exam preparation Encourages students to communicate with their instructors outside of class about their progress and any questions they have about the material. Offers feedback on progress to students' parents and teachers where appropriate Builds meaningful connections with students from diverse backgrounds. Monitors student progress in the attainment of the High School Diploma. Will potentially need to drive from one site location to another as needed for student support. Assist school staff with the efficient and organized distribution of student lunches and snacks as needed. Actively monitor indoor and outdoor dining spaces during lunch periods to promote positive student behavior and enforce campus rules. Maintain a highly visible presence in hallways and designated outdoor areas during student transitions to ensure safe, orderly hallway traffic. Assist with daily student engagement by collecting and documenting absence data, while executing proactive phone and email outreach to absent students and their parents/guardians. Guide eligible students through the dual enrollment application, registration, and course selection processes. Contribute to a positive and welcoming school environment and report any concerns to the assigned supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience assessing the progress of assigned students to ensure effective processes Bilingual preferred; at a minimum, the ability to understand and to make one's self understood to all Spanish speaking individuals Passion and excitement for the subject being taught Professional experience preparing lesson plans and personalized instruction Experience working with teenagers and young adults in a supervised setting Theoretical and practical understanding of the subject to be taught Personal accountability and reliability when scheduling sessions with parents and students Ability to teach students of all ages at varying levels of understanding and proficiency Demonstrated ability to engage opportunity youth with barriers to their education in meaningful, interesting and creative learning experiences Ability to work effectively with people of diverse settings and backgrounds. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Sincere desire to assist young people to succeed, develop self-confidence and become effective community leaders; familiarity with various challenges and issues faced by youth from low-income communities. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making effective decisions and in problem solving.
PAY RATE & BENEFITS STARTING
26.00/hr - $36.00/hr plus benefits, based on qualification and experience. Position is full-time (part-time positions are available as well); year round, beginning July 2026, with paid training and preparation time before the school year begins. Position open until filled.
