Early Learner Assistant Kumon Math & Reading Center - Indianapolis-North Keystone Indianapolis, IN Job Details Part-time $11.50 - $12.50 an hour 14 hours ago Benefits Flexible schedule Qualifications Working with students Positive reinforcement (classroom management strategies) Full Job Description Position Overview The Early Learners Assistant supports young students (typically ages 3-7) as they begin developing foundational math, reading, writing, and classroom habits. This role focuses on creating a warm, structured, and encouraging learning environment while helping students build confidence, independence, and consistency in their Kumon routines. Core Responsibilities Guide early learners through worksheets in math and reading, ensuring correct pencil grip, number formation, letter formation, and proper reading techniques. Model and reinforce classroom routines , including sitting properly, staying focused, following directions, and completing work independently. Provide gentle, positive redirection when students become distracted, frustrated, or need help transitioning between tasks. Support pre-reading and pre-math skills , such as counting, number recognition, phonemic awareness, tracing, and early handwriting. Track student progress by noting areas of strength, areas needing improvement, and any behavioral or academic observations. Communicate effectively with instructors about student needs, worksheet adjustments, or concerns. Maintain a clean, organized early learner area , ensuring materials are accessible and the environment is safe and welcoming. Encourage confidence and independence , celebrating small wins and helping students build strong learning habits. Goals of the Role Build strong foundational academic skills that prepare students for higher-level Kumon work. Develop early learner independence so students can complete tasks with minimal assistance. Strengthen classroom behavior skills such as focus, patience, responsibility, and persistence. Create a positive first learning experience that helps students enjoy coming to class. Support instructors by ensuring early learners receive consistent, high-quality guidance. Requirements Patience and warmth when working with young children. Strong communication skills , especially with early learners who may need clear, simple instructions. Ability to multitask and manage several students at once in a calm, organized manner. Basic understanding of early childhood development (preferred but not required). Comfort with repetitive skill-building tasks , such as tracing, counting, reading aloud, and handwriting practice. Reliability and punctuality , especially during class hours. Ability to follow Kumon methods and training , ensuring consistency in instruction. Professionalism with parents , staff, and students. Preferred Qualities Experience working with children (tutoring, babysitting, classroom support, daycare, etc.). Friendly, encouraging personality. Strong attention to detail. Ability to stay calm and positive in a busy learning environment.
