Part Time HP Description Early College is seeking candidates for the position of English Tutor. This is a part-time position in which the successful candidate will be integrated into our Early College program at Ben Davis University High School. The English Tutor position is designed to provide one-on-one and small-group support for early college students at Ben Davis University High School. The English Tutor will work closely with both Wayne Township and Vincennes University faculty and staff to support students as they navigate college-level composition and literature coursework. This role requires guiding students through complex texts, essay structure, critical thinking, and the development of effective study habits that prepare them for success in degree-bearing courses. Responsibilities include working with students who are struggling in applicable BDU courses, ensuring tutoring support directly aligns with Vincennes University English instructor expectations, and assisting students with formulating thesis statements, conducting collegiate-level research, citing sources in MLA and APA formats, and editing their own work. Early College at Ben Davis University High School is a partnership between Vincennes University and Wayne Township School Corporation. It is located on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Previous experience in a K-12 or post-secondary setting is preferred but not required. Ben Davis University High School is an endorsed Early College in the MSD of Wayne Township Schools located on the west side of Indianapolis. This position is for an adjunct professor who works for Vincennes University at our early college high school. BDU has a supportive small school environment with 430 students who must apply, interview, and are accepted and start the program in grade 9. BDUHS only has grades 10-12 and has celebrated 100% & 99% graduation rates for the past eleven years in which students earned both their Academic & Technical Honors Diploma and Associate Degree. Duties/Responsibilities:
Providing academic tutoring or other resources for students in need. Customize and craft effective plans that address student weaknesses and strengths. Assist, evaluate, develop, and integrate the students in learning. Motivate students and provide them with the confidence to be successful. Foster meaningful relationships with students and faculty. Develop study skills specifically tailored to each student. Teach referred students how to learn by providing students with study skills and study habits. Demonstrate excellent writing, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Evaluate student progress to document improvements or identify additional deficiencies. Provide ongoing communication with teachers, parents, students, and counselors regarding the academic progress of individual students who are referred to them by counselors/teachers to receive assistance and academic support. Support the vision of the BDU and Vincennes University Early College. Administrative/clerical - as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent attention to detail, interpersonal, and planning skills. Knowledge of general office management systems and procedures. Ability to operate general office equipment. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, G Suite, or similar software. Ability to learn and operate Learning Management Systems of various partners and VU. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to work with partner sites, students, and families with various backgrounds. Ability to quickly pivot from one project to the next as needed.
Minimum qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Applicants must also have an earned Baccalaureate with twelve hours in college-level English.
Physical Demands:
Normal Physical demands for successful work in a normal office environment. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Ability to utilize hands for general office work including typing, filing, answering telephones, and writing.
