Electric Line Worker Apprentice

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the assigned representative or the Electric Utility Director, this position performs journeyman level electrical work in in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution lines in accordance with the standards of the trade. Work involves increasingly difficult and skilled duties.

Essential Functions:

Assists in placing poles, pulling wire, and supplying equipment to line man. Climbs poles to repair, remove & install streetlights & security lights. Keeps Truck stocked with required parts and materials. Assists in trouble shooting distribution system problems. Installs 600-volt systems with supervision. Assists line workers in the operation and maintenance of power substations. Performs manual work in digging ditches and laying of conduit. Assists line workers in setting transformers, grounds, wires, and transformers. Installs lighting circuits in buildings. Assists line worker in trouble shooting to find and repair problems. Drives, maintains, and operates boom trucks, forklifts and other maintenance vehicles and machinery. Lifts medium to heavy objects and climbs ladders and stairs. Uses power chainsaws for felling trees and cutting up felled trees. Participates in tree trimming around energized lines. Installs and dismantles city Christmas decorations. May be assigned to operate any vehicle or equipment to inspect poles and attachments. Required to participate in the stand-by and/or call-out rotation to respond to problems after normal work hours, and on weekends and may be subject to call-out at any time when other call out personnel require additional assistance. Works directly with Customer Service to process daily Work Orders which consist of, but is not limited to, meter work, monthly cutoff lists, and re-reads. Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs): Knowledge of methods, material, and tools used in electric line construction and maintenance work. Knowledge of the principles of electric theory as applied to electrical circuits and wire systems. Knowledge of light construction and maintenance equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards of trade and of adequate/necessary safety precautions. Skill to continually gain knowledge of electric principles, circuitry, and wiring systems. Ability to learn underground distribution system including all switches, termination etc. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Education, Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent. Completion of Lineman apprentice training school or two (2) years of on-the-job training.

Licenses, Certificates, Special Requirements:

A valid State of Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License, or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
