  • Full-time Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) is a municipal utility, serving the city of Spencer, Iowa since 1942.
Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) is known for high proficiency in reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement. Today we serve approximately 6,300 electric customers. SMU is seeking applicants for a full-time versatile and safety-conscious Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate would be a self-motivated multi-skilled individual to ensure the reliability of our electric and other utility infrastructure. This is a hands-on "full-system" role where you will manage everything from high-voltage substation assets and generation equipment to critical facility systems. You will bridge the gap between heavy industrial mechanics and sophisticated electrical control logic. In this dual-capacity role, you will perform high-level troubleshooting, installation, and repair on critical utility assets—including transformers, switchgear, and control systems—while simultaneously managing the facility's HVAC, backup power, and automated building systems. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver who can pivot seamlessly between industrial electrical diagnostics and commercial mechanical maintenance. The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this position. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Duties/Responsibilities :
    Troubleshoot and Repair Generation/Substation Assets:
Diagnose and resolve complex failures in rotating equipment (turbines, generators, motors) and stationary assets (transformers, high-voltage breakers, and switchgear).
      Execute Multi-Craft Repairs:
Perform hands-on mechanical repairs involving hydraulics, pneumatics, and power transmissions while simultaneously managing the associated electrical controls and 480V+ power feeds.
      • Analyze Control Logic (PLC/SCADA): Interface with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) to monitor real-time data, identify I/O faults, and verify sequence of operations during equipment downtime.
      Maintain Grid Reliability Equipment:
Work with outside vendors to test and calibrate protective relays, instrument transformers, and voltage regulators to ensure the safety and stability of the power distribution network. Perform routine inspections, cleaning, and testing of substation-based capacitor banks to ensure power factor correction and voltage stability.
        Perform Precision Preventative Maintenance:
Conduct scheduled inspections, oil sampling, vibration analysis, and infrared thermography to identify potential failures before they cause outages.
          VFD & Motor Control:
Troubleshoot and parameterize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and soft starters for industrial pumps and fans.
            Interpret Technical Documentation:
Read and accurately apply information from one-line diagrams, three-line schematics, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and mechanical blueprints to locate and fix faults.
              Document and Report Technical Data:
Maintain precise records of maintenance activities, equipment history, and parts inventory within the company's internal recordkeeping system.
Facilities & Critical Infrastructure System Maintenance:
Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems to ensure peak operational efficiency and 100% uptime.
              Infrastructure Care:
Execute repairs including carpentry, painting, and groundskeeping to maintain the professional appearance and structural integrity of entire utility facilities.
              Vendor Management:
Supervise external contractors and service providers for specialized repairs, ensuring all work meets quality standards and project timelines.
              Energy Efficiency:
Monitor building automation systems (BAS) to optimize energy consumption and identify cost-saving opportunities in lighting and climate control. Safety & Compliance

Operate strictly within OSHA, NFPA, NESC, NEC and localized safety standards, including mandatory Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and Arc Flash protection. Manage hazardous materials to ensure a safe environment for all personnel.
                  Documentation:
Maintain precise records of repairs, inspections, and parts usage within the utilities recordkeeping system.
