We work directly with boat manufacturers and boat owners to create first quality products combining top of the line materials and innovative designs with almost 50 years of experience in the trade. We are searching for a Vinyl Pattern Designer / Textile CAD Engineer or similar profession that can design the style, ergonomics, and fit of marine upholstery products in a fast-paced environment, working closely with management, production, and clients. This person will be responsible for carrying out the following duties of the design department: vinyl patterning, digitizing, marker making, prototyping, problem-solving, documentation, estimation, process improvement, and quality assurance. This position will report directly to the Lead Design Engineer and collaborate with Clients, Engineering/Design, Customer Service, Purchasing, and Production (cutting and sewing) teams.
Tasks:
Interpreting verbal and visual direction to create fully dimensional and functional products based on marine industry standards, construction techniques and engineering principles. Revising and improving existing products. Making recommendations relating to manufacturing i.e. process, materials, etc.; Create product assembly instructions and documentation for the manufacturing process. Be involved in the prototyping process. Constantly monitor the manufacturing process to ensure that it meets the required standards. Able to understand and become familiar with our particular manufacturing techniques. Visit the vessels to understand the requirements of the assigned project, gather necessary information and make templates when necessary. Meet with customers to identify problems with delivered parts. Being able to give guidance to the production manager on how to solve the problems and develop strategies, instructions and documentation to update the production process. Create, digitize, and grade vinyl patterns using Optitex (or similar 2D/3D textile CAD), accounting for material stretch, foam thickness, and sewing tolerances.
Skills:
Be able to problem-solve in a three-dimensional space, have a creative eye, high attention to detail and work fluidly between departmental needs to maintain a consistent production schedule. Strong understanding of soft goods construction, marine vinyl properties, seam allowances, and upholstery techniques. Excellent communication and inter-personal skills as you will be working as part of a close-knit team. Excellent prioritization and project management skills Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) is preferred. Attention to detail as well as quality and accuracy. Hand-sketching, physical templating, or other concept development techniques. Willing to learn new technology and fabrication methods. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Experience working with multiple disciplines and leadership.
Experience:
Education:
Degree or certification in Pattern Making, Fashion/Apparel Design, Textile Engineering, Industrial Design, or related is preferred. We also consider Associates degrees or equivalent hands-on trade experience. Pattern Making /
Upholstery Design:
2+ years (Preferred).
Textile CAD:
2+ years (Preferred). Optitex experience is highly preferred (experience with Lectra, Gerber, or AutoCAD is a plus). Experience working in a cut-and-sew or soft-goods manufacturing environment (Preferred). Project management or leadership experience is a plus. Work experience in marine boat upholstery or equivalent is a plus.
