Van Dam Custom Boats is hiring a full-time, year-round Mechanical Designer (CAD/CAM & CNC Programming) to join our team of designers and craftspeople building some of the world's finest custom wooden boats. This position supports the design and engineering department by developing three-dimensional CAD models, fabrication drawings, and CNC manufacturing files used in the construction of our custom vessels. Working from naval architecture 3D models, the Mechanical Designer develops detailed shop drawings, CNC-ready files, and fabrication documentation used by the wood shop, metal shop, and boatbuilding teams. This role is ideal for someone who is mechanically inclined and understands how parts move from design into real-world manufacturing. The role works closely with naval architects, engineers, and shop craftspeople to ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, and aligned with the standards of our custom builds.
Pay:
Pay will be determined based on education, experience, and overall fit for the role. Applications are due : April 3, 2026. Initial screening calls may begin prior to the application deadline and will continue the week of April 6. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in a working interview following the initial screening. The preferred start date for this position is May 4, 2026.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare CNC machining files and CAM outputs used in the machine shop and wood shops for fabrication of components. Assist with the design and detailing of mechanical components, mechanisms, hardware installations, and structural assemblies. Generate metal shop drawings and installation drawings for fabricated components used in vessel construction. Produce construction drawings for wood shop from 3D models and design concepts. Support the production team by providing dimensions, drawing clarification, and technical support during the construction process. Collaborate with naval architects, engineers, and fabrication staff to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and consistent with project specifications. Support the design department in maintaining communication between the engineering office and shop floor teams. Participate in design reviews and collaborate with team members to resolve design or fabrication challenges. Maintain organized digital project files, drawings, and documentation for each boat project.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated proficiency with 3D CAD software Demonstrated proficiency with CNC programming Preferred experience with 5-axis simultaneous milling Preferred experience with Fusion 360 CAM software Understanding of 2D drafting principles and fabrication drawing standards. Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in mechanism design and component detailing. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and understand fabrication processes. Ability to collaborate effectively with designers, engineers, and shop personnel. Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in drawings and models. Strong communication and listening skills. Passion for boats, boating, or being on the water preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with Fusion 360 CAD software Rhino or AutoCAD familiarity Experience with Fusion 360 CAM software Experience working in fabrication or machining environments
Preferred:
familiarity with boat construction, marine environments, or boating activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
An engineering, mechanical design, or related degree is preferred but not required. Equivalent experience in CAD drafting, mechanical design, machining, fabrication, or marine construction will also be considered. CNC programming experience is required. Experience in fabrication environments, machining, or mechanical design is beneficial but not required. Candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and an understanding of how parts are manufactured and assembled are encouraged to apply, regardless of years of experience.
