Job Description

The Mission Concepts and Capabilities (MCC) division of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a Chemist to support research, development, test, and evaluation as well as provide analytical and synthetical chemical support. The right candidate will have a background as a chemist, chemical scientist or chemical engineer. This person will work with subject matter experts to ensure safe, accurate, and cost-effective execution of chemical analysis, synthesis, and potentially production capabilities for bench-scale synthesis. The candidate will possess surface-based analytical and synthetic chemistry knowledge and laboratory capabilities, particularly those in which the resultant surface is used for sensing applications. The candidate is expected to know and understand surface-based analytical techniques. The candidate will perform work in a laboratory setting and must understand techniques pertaining to chemical synthesis, chemical analysis, synthesis scale up, chemical engineering, and post-batch process analytical evaluations.
Essential Functions:
Researching, developing, testing, and evaluating (RDT&E) as well as manufacturing and providing in-service analytical and synthetical chemical support. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with customers and stakeholders. Work under supervised direction but be able to independently determine and develop approaches to solutions. Develop professionally to maintain and expand technical competence. Ensure proper execution of the project including planning, scheduling, and procurements. Implement safety and quality programs. Manage and prioritize numerous assignments. Work independently in a laboratory-based environment Possess synthetic chemistry skills, including the ability to plan reactions, determine equipment and reagents, determine and perform analysis steps, purify the product, etc. Possess analytical expertise for understanding material characterization
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in engineering discipline or related scientific field (physics, chemistry, etc.) with 2-4 years of industry experience Demonstrated ability to provide clear written and oral briefings, including the ability to tailor content for specific audiences Experience with chemically-relevant engineering, such as synthesis scaleup, in-line analysis, automated chemical synthesis methods Experience with process scale-up Experience in chemical synthesis process design, development, and optimization Must be a US citizen Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (MS) in chemistry, chemical engineering or other related technical field Programmatic work experience Process engineering and integration knowledge Knowledge of quality requirements and system qualification.
