Position Summary The Project Engineer supports the successful planning, coordination, design, and execution of commercial sheet metal & roofing projects from preconstruction through project completion. This position works closely with Project Managers, field leadership, general contractors, architects, vendors, and internal teams to ensure projects are properly documented, coordinated, and completed according to plans, specifications, schedules, and Herzog quality standards. A key component of this position is creating, reviewing, and maintaining accurate shop drawings and technical drawings using CAD software. The Project Engineer will assist with material takeoffs, submittals, RFIs, project documentation, procurement, scheduling, and field coordination while providing technical support to Project Managers and field personnel. This position is ideal for an individual who is technically minded, detail-oriented, organized, and interested in developing their knowledge of commercial construction and project management. Essential Job Responsibilities Project Engineering & Coordination Assist Project Managers with the planning and coordination of commercial projects from award through completion. Review project plans, specifications, architectural drawings, and contract documents to understand Herzog's scope of work. Assist with project-specific material takeoffs and quantities. Prepare, organize, submit, and track project submittals. Assist with preparing and tracking Requests for Information (RFIs) and other project correspondence. Maintain accurate and organized project documentation throughout the life of each project. Assist Project Managers with procurement and coordination of materials, equipment, and other project needs. Track project deadlines, submittal requirements, material lead times, and other critical project milestones. Coordinate with Project Managers, foremen, vendors, general contractors, architects, and other project stakeholders as necessary. Assist with project scheduling and communicate changes or potential scheduling conflicts to appropriate personnel. Attend project meetings as requested and document necessary follow-up items. Assist with change order documentation and identification of work that falls outside the original project scope. Support Project Managers with project closeout documentation and other completion requirements. Travel to jobsites as necessary to verify field conditions, obtain measurements, attend meetings, and assist with project coordination. CAD, Drafting & Shop Drawings Create accurate and detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, installation drawings, details, and other technical drawings using AutoCAD and other applicable software. Translate architectural drawings, specifications, field measurements, and project requirements into clear and accurate sheet metal drawings. Develop drawings for commercial sheet metal systems, including metal wall panels, roofing components, flashings, trims, copings, and other architectural sheet metal components. Review drawings for accuracy, constructability, dimensions, materials, and compliance with project specifications before submission. Revise drawings based on architect, general contractor, Project Manager, foreman, or customer comments. Maintain current drawing revisions and ensure project teams are working from the most recent approved documents. Organize and maintain CAD files, drawing logs, revisions, and related project documentation. Review CAD designs and technical details with Project Managers and field leadership. Provide updated drawings and technical information to field personnel as necessary. Coordinate drawing details with actual field conditions and communicate discrepancies to the Project Manager. Assist with building scans, measurements, and other technology used to document existing conditions. Assist with updating and maintaining Herzog's CAD standards, drawing templates, details, and drafting procedures. Develop an understanding of fabrication and installation methods to ensure drawings are practical and constructible. Field & Production Support Serve as a technical resource for Project Managers, foremen, fabrication personnel, and field crews. Work with field leadership to resolve drawing, dimension, material, and installation questions. Visit jobsites as necessary to verify measurements and field conditions. Communicate drawing revisions and project changes clearly to affected personnel. Assist in identifying potential conflicts before fabrication or installation. Coordinate with the fabrication/shop team to ensure drawings provide the information necessary for accurate production. Assist in resolving project issues in a timely manner to minimize delays and rework. Maintain communication between the office, fabrication shop, and field personnel. Secondary Job Responsibilities Assist Project Managers with weekly and long-term project scheduling. Attend weekly project meetings to review project progress, upcoming deadlines, material needs, and scheduling. Assist other Project Managers and departments as needed. Assist with project estimating and takeoffs when requested. Participate in jobsite visits and project meetings. Assist with documentation, photographs, measurements, and project closeout requirements. Support continuous improvement of Sheet Metal Department processes and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned based on department and project needs. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, specifications, details, and construction documents. Knowledge of or willingness to learn commercial sheet metal systems, roofing systems and construction methods. Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar drafting/design software. Ability to create clear, accurate, and constructible technical drawings. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and applicable project management software. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple projects, drawings, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with Project Managers, field personnel, contractors, architects, vendors, and customers. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. Ability to identify discrepancies between plans, specifications, drawings, and actual field conditions. Self-motivated and capable of completing assigned responsibilities with limited supervision. Ability to take direction, accept feedback, and make drawing or project revisions in a timely manner. Strong sense of accountability and follow-through. Professional judgment and ability to recognize when an issue should be escalated to a Project Manager or department leadership. Commitment to Herzog's safety, quality, and customer-service standards. Preferred Qualifications Associate's degree, Engineering, Architectural Drafting, CAD Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent construction experience will also be considered. Previous CAD or drafting experience preferred. Previous experience in commercial construction, architectural sheet metal, roofing, or a related trade preferred. Experience reading architectural and construction drawings preferred. Experience with AutoCAD and construction project management software preferred. Familiarity with metal wall panels, architectural sheet metal, roofing systems, flashings, and fabrication is beneficial. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to jobsites as required. Physical & Work Requirements This position primarily works in an office environment but requires periodic travel to active construction jobsites, fabrication areas, and customer locations. The employee must be able to safely navigate active construction sites and comply with all required personal protective equipment and safety requirements. The position may occasionally require climbing stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, taking field measurements, working outdoors, and exposure to varying weather and jobsite conditions. Success in This Position A successful Sheet Metal Project Engineer will: Produce accurate and timely drawings and project documentation. Identify potential issues before they create fabrication or field problems. Maintain organized and current project information. Communicate effectively between Project Managers, the fabrication shop, and field crews. Meet drawing, submittal, procurement, and project deadlines. Demonstrate a willingness to continually develop technical and construction knowledge. Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and consistently follow through. Help projects move efficiently from design and planning through fabrication, installation, and completion.
