The City of St. Cloud is accepting applications for an Engineering Technician. The successful applicant may fill the position as either an Engineering Technician I or Engineering Technician II based on their prior experience and technical certifications. The Engineering Technician I and Engineering Technician II positions work as part of the Engineering Department team performing advanced technical civil engineering work focused on design, plan preparation, construction administration, construction inspection, topographic survey, and construction field staking of public infrastructure improvements. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of a professional engineer or an administrative superior. The position is full-time and allows the opportunity to work outside in the warmer months and inside during the colder months, and to be a part of the project team for public infrastructure projects of all sizes.

Key Responsibilities :

Designing roadway and public utility improvements by establishing line and grade and developing cross-sections. Preparation of bidding documents for public roadway, trail and utility improvements. Gathering topographic field survey and developing surface terrain model of existing conditions. Providing field construction control and stakes as needed to provide contractor with information required to construct public improvements. Construction administration and on-site job inspection to ensure that all work is constructed in conformance with the plans and specifications and industry standards. Record keeping, pay voucher development and other documentation and reports associated with municipal state aid and/or federal aid funded projects. Complete preliminary designs, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates and prepare engineering reports and related studies to assist in the planning and implementation of public. Possession of a valid Minnesota driver's license. Driver's License must be unrestricted except for corrective lenses. Engineering Technician II

• Experience in civil engineering, surveying, construction site inspection, contract administration, staking or related field. Engineering Technician II
• Certification by the Minnesota Department of Transportation in the areas of Grading and Base I & II, Bituminous Street, Concrete Field I & II.

Minimum Requirements :

Completion of a two-year post-secondary program from an accredited institution in civil engineering, land surveying, or related field. Possession of a valid Minnesota driver's license. Driver's License must be unrestricted except for corrective lenses. Engineering Technician II

• Experience in civil engineering, surveying, construction site inspection, contract administration, staking or related field. Engineering Technician II
• Certification by the Minnesota Department of Transportation in the areas of Grading and Base I & II, Bituminous Street, Concrete Field I & II. Engineering Technician II
• Must acquire certifications as required by MS4 Permit withing 12 months of hire or promotion. Engineering Technician II
• Proficient skills in the use of AutoCAD for the design and plan preparation of public infrastructure improvements.

Salary :

The 2026 base Engineering Technician I salary range is $59,793

• $80,386 with a beginning salary of $59,793 based on the current labor contract. The 2026 base Engineering Technician II salary range is $67,819
• $91,177, with a beginning salary of $67,819 based on the current labor contract.

On January 1, 2027, there is a 4.75% general increase to all ranges and steps.

Retirement :

An excellent retirement pension plan is provided by the city through the Public Employee Retirement Association (PERA). The employee contributes 6.5% of wages, and the city contributes 7.5% of gross salary, equaling a total contribution of 14%. Additional retirement plans are available in the form of a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, as a deduction from pay.
