Civil Engineering Technician - Strongsville

Job Description

The Civil Engineering Technician supports the planning, design, construction, and inspection of capital infrastructure projects throughout Cleveland Metroparks. Reporting to the Director of Construction, the Civil Engineering Technician supports project design, bidding, construction observation, and project administration while partnering with contractors and internal teams to ensure projects are completed in accordance with plans, specifications, and Park District standards.

This role offers a unique combination of office and field work, with approximately equal time spent supporting project activities in the office and conducting site visits and construction inspections throughout the Park District. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and collaborating with contractors and stakeholders to advance projects from planning through completion.

Key Responsibilities:

Supports the design, planning, and management of capital infrastructure projects, including preparation of drawings, specifications, bid documents, and project scopes.

Conducts field inspections and construction observations on capital improvement projects to ensure work is completed in accordance with project plans, specifications, quality standards, and Park District requirements. Documents project progress, field conditions, and contractor activities while participating in project meetings and providing project updates and recommendations.

Requires frequent field visits to job sites in developed and remote areas.

Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.

Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public.

Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.

Updates and enhances professional knowledge through participation in continuing education activities (e.g., relevant conferences, seminars, in-service trainings, and certification programs).

Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction engineering, or a related field preferred; supplemented by one or more years of experience in civil engineering drafting and design; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Candidates with an associate degree in Construction Technology or a related field, combined with relevant construction, infrastructure, drafting, design, or field inspection experience, will also be considered.

Qualifications:

Valid driver's license

Demonstrated knowledge of civil engineering design standards, construction techniques and materials, engineering and surveying principles

Experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting and design software preferred

Ability to effectively field inspect capital infrastructure construction projects

Strong relationship-building and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with contractors, consultants, employees, and the public

Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings

Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization

Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project coordination skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, analyze information, and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations

Collaborative approach with the ability to work effectively across departments and project teams

Proficiency in software programs including all Microsoft Office programs

Professional demeanor with the ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information

Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative while supporting multiple projects in both office and field settings
