Automation Solutions:
you're sketching a control strategy in the morning, writing ladder logic after lunch, validating a vision-guided robot cell in the afternoon, and by week's end you're on-site helping a customer bring a new production line to life. This is a hands-on role that blends hardware and software, covering the full lifecycle—concept, programming, commissioning, integration, and sustained post-install support. You'll split your time between our Birmingham facility and customer plants, with travel averaging about 25% as projects move into install, startup, troubleshooting, training, and service. What You'll Tackle Collaboration and Project Support Align daily priorities and technical direction with the Controls Engineering Manager. Work closely with management and the engineering team for project-specific guidance. Coordinate with sales, PMs, controls, mechanical, fabrication, and installation teams to deliver integrated automation systems. Interface directly with customers to clarify requirements, resolve technical concerns, and provide responsive support. Offer technical oversight during panel build, wiring, assembly, and machine install. Keep stakeholders informed on progress, risks, schedule impacts, and needed customer inputs. Controls Engineering and Integration Design, program, integrate, and debug automated electromechanical control systems. Develop and refine PLC/HMI code (including ladder logic) and related industrial control programs. Program and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo motion, robotics, vision systems, and associated automation hardware. Interpret electrical drawings, specifications, and sequences of operation; contribute to drawing updates and documentation. Perform hands-on integration, modifications, and repairs across robotic, mechanical, electrical, and controls domains. Plan and execute testing and runoffs to verify functionality against customer and contractual requirements. Conduct quality checks and help ensure compliance with company safety policies and electrical codes. Diagnose root causes and implement durable corrective actions. Commissioning, Installation, and Field Support Build, test, commission, and install automated manufacturing equipment—both in-house and on-site. Travel about 25% to support installation, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, training, and post-delivery service. Use electrical test equipment, hand tools, and power tools to complete assigned work. Troubleshoot and repair electromechanical control systems at Automation Solutions and at customer facilities. Support customer production startup and resolve controls-related issues during commissioning. Document programming changes, troubleshooting steps, work completed, and system configurations. Inspect controls panels, field wiring, and installed equipment for quality. Represent Automation Solutions professionally on every site visit. Shop and Workplace Maintain a clean, safe, well-organized work area. Assist with general housekeeping across fabrication and shop spaces. Follow safety procedures and use required PPE. Work safely around energized electrical systems, industrial machinery, and robotic equipment. Qualifications Education Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or similar preferred. Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field preferred. Relevant industrial controls experience may substitute for a degree. Experience 2-4 years of controls programming or closely related industrial controls experience. Proven PLC programming background (including ladder logic) for creation, modification, and troubleshooting. Hands-on exposure to one or more: PLCs, HMIs, variable frequency drives, servo/motion systems, industrial robots, machine vision, and industrial networks. Ability to read and work from full electrical drawing sets. Practical experience integrating, modifying, troubleshooting, or repairing industrial control systems.
