SOUTH COAST AQMD AND JOB OVERVIEW

This is a transfer opportunity, open only to current South Coast AQMD employees, and is expected to result in a transfer list from which current and future Air Quality Instrument Specialist II vacancies may be filled. Please note that a transfer application, once accepted, is active for six calendar months.

Repairs, installs, operates, and maintains air monitoring and meteorological instrumentation and equipment, including testing, diagnosing, and repairing malfunctioning instruments and components. Calibrates a variety of air monitoring and meteorological instruments, according to South Coast AQMD specifications, to ensure validity of data. Installs and modifies instruments used for meteorological and contaminant monitoring projects. Prepares Mobile Source Test Vehicle (MSTV) for source testing activities by performing a variety of electronic tests to ensure that MSTV instrumentation records data and analyzes contaminants according to South Coast AQMD standards. Tests instruments and traces circuitry and components to ascertain cause of fluctuations in readings, instrument malfunctions, and failures; adjusts, replaces or repairs faulty components by using test equipment, tools, schematics, and instrument manuals. Disassembles malfunctioning instruments and equipment and examines mechanisms, circuitry, wires, electrical motors, and other subsystems, installs instruments and equipment, and tests assembly for conformance with instrument manual and South Coast AQMD specifications. Makes recommendations and implements modifications to instruments and procedures to improve accuracy, dependability, and serviceability. Records accurate and complete notes and reports on repairs, calibrations, instrument performance, and modifications in instrument and station log books, maintenance sheets, and other documents. May occasionally serve as lead worker on meteorological or air monitoring projects. May assist on the development of written procedures to operate, service, repair, or calibrate air monitoring instrumentation. May respond to emergency service calls, as assigned or as the situation requires.

MINIMUM AND DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS ELIGIBILITY

Must currently be in the Air Quality Instrument Specialist II classification. OR To transfer to a new class title, your current classification must have the exact same pay and you must complete the application demonstrating that you meet the minimum requirements for the new class.

To transfer, an employee must have passed probation (12-month initial probation or 6-month promotional probation).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE

• EITHER
• One year of experience as an Air Quality Instrument Specialist I.
• OR•Completion of at least 34 semester or 51 quarter units from an accredited college or university in electronics, physics, chemistry, or a related field, AND one year of experience performing duties comparable to an Air Quality Instrument Specialist I or two years of experience performing duties comparable to an Assistant Air Quality Instrument Specialist.

LICENSE:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License. A California Class B Driver License may be required for some positions in the class.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Operating, servicing, and repairing electronic and mechanical instrumentation and equipment; theories and principles of physics, chemistry, and electronics as applied to the calibration, repair, and maintenance of air monitoring instruments and equipment; methods used in the measurement and monitoring of air contaminants; techniques for installing, calibrating, and repairing instrumentation used in the air monitoring program.

ABILITY TO

Read, interpret, and perform operating and maintenance procedures; understand and follow oral and written instructions for installing, operating, servicing or repairing air quality monitoring instrumentation; respond to emergency service calls in a timely manner and restore instruments to service; perform specialized calibrations and functional checks; special projects independently with minimal guidance; prepare and maintain accurate logs, records, and reports; and work cooperatively with other agencies, divisions, co-workers, and the general public; operate, service, repair, calibrate, or adjust air quality monitoring instrumentation; set up and install air monitoring instruments, using various tools, electronic testing equipment, material and processes.
