Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Lift Station Mechanic will be requested to perform varied and responsible tasks under the supervision of a field supervisor, the Utilities and Stormwater Assistant Director, and/or the Utilities and Stormwater Director. The Lift Station Mechanic is responsible for performing mechanical, building, and grounds maintenance work on sewage pumping stations and lift stations for the Town of Medley. Performs regular and preventative maintenance to reduce equipment failures and associated costs.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
This is a full-time position, working 40 hours weekly and reporting directly to the Utilities and Stormwater Director.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs regular maintenance and inspection of sewage pumping stations within the Town of Medley. Initiates maintenance and performs repair activities to keep these stations at maximum operating condition. Checks the pump alternation to ensure automatic operation of the pumping system. Checks for proper level control to ensure no backups occur in the system. On a scheduled basis, checks float systems for grease buildup and degreases as needed; checks telemetry to ensure proper working conditions. Inspects packing and adjusts packing as required to maintain packing leakage at the proper rate of 3-5 drops per minute. Cleans and flushes packing boxes as required. Ensures that sump pumps are in proper operating condition and cleans the sump pit. Ensures proper operation and maintenance of all pumps. Troubleshoots utilizing vacuum and pressure gauges to ensure pumps are operating at peak efficiency and to make necessary adjustments to keep the pumps at maximum efficiency. Cleans the pump room, dry well, and wet well regularly. Maintains a dry well in a dry condition. Washes down regularly to keep odors and insect buildup to a minimum. Scrapes the walls of the wet well as needed to eliminate grease buildup and help to control odor. Records inspections of the pumping stations in the log to include date, time, personnel performing inspections, activities performed, and maintenance requirements. Maintains the buildings of the pumping station; picks up debris in and around the pumping station grounds. Cuts and trims grass, provides landscaping, scrapes and paints existing trim and doors. Mends damages caused by vandals and/or weather. Maintains and operates weed-eaters, trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, and lawnmowers. Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of job-specific equipment, such as pumps. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and off-hour shifts for emergencies. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.MINIMUM EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent One (1) year of experience on sewer collection system infrastructure or similar work involving the operation of light and heavy motorized equipment. Wastewater Collections Level C preferred.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Properly use and care of all tools, equipment, and materials in the maintenance of pumps, controllers, and motors commonly found in wastewater collection systems. Knowledge of pumps, generators, valves, and telemetry systems. Basic electrical troubleshooting & mechanical repair skills. Inspect, clean, and perform preventive maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment. Read and record readings of meters and related instruments. Familiar with float level control, float ball level control, and transducer level control. Perform manual work such as shoveling and digging. Standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in mechanical maintenance trades. Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions. General work methods related to electrical system maintenance and repair. Perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to read and interpret materials and service manuals. Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of job-specific equipment, such as pumps.WORK AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach, and bend. Requires mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects. Requires the ability to stand for long periods. Requires the ability to perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing, and/or pulling of objects which may approximately weigh 25 pounds and may occasionally weigh over 100 pounds. May be required to work in unpleasant conditions with harsh and toxic substances. May be required to wear protective apparel, including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes, and gloves. May be required to work within enclosed spaces or at heights below ground level. May be required to work around foul odors. May be required to work around loud noise. May be required to work around moving mechanical parts. May be required to work around electrical current.
