Working under the supervision of the Quality Engineer, this role ensures gauges, instruments, and test equipment remain accurate and traceable to national standards, while verifying that new, revised, or transferred parts fully conform to engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements before entering production. The QE Technician directly supports product quality, audit readiness, and compliance with
AS9100/ISO 9001
for aerospace, defense, and industrial customers. Key Position Responsibilities | Essential Functions Perform routine and unscheduled calibration of mechanical, electrical, and dimensional measuring equipment (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, torque wrenches, pressure gauges, multimeters, and similar IM&TE) per established procedures and calibration standards. Maintain the calibration management system/database, including equipment records, calibration due dates, certificates, and traceability to NIST or other recognized national standards; coordinate with outside calibration labs for equipment requiring external or higher-level calibration and review incoming certificates for completeness and accuracy. Identify and tag out-of-tolerance or non-conforming equipment; assess impact on product quality and initiate nonconformance and corrective action as needed. Track and manage the calibration schedule to prevent use of expired or overdue equipment, communicating proactively with equipment owners across both facilities. Perform minor equipment repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on measuring and test equipment as qualified; support new equipment qualification, including initial calibration, acceptance testing, and record setup. Perform complete First Article Inspections (AS9102 Forms 1, 2, and 3) on new, revised, or transferred parts, verifying every characteristic on the engineering drawing and specification. Balloon engineering drawings to identify and number all characteristics requiring inspection, ensuring full coverage per AS9102 requirements. Use precision measurement equipment (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, optical comparators, CMM) to measure and record dimensional, material, and functional characteristics. Compile complete FAI documentation packages, including material certifications, special process certifications (heat treat, plating, NDT), and functional test results. Identify discrepancies between as-measured results and drawing requirements; document nonconformances and coordinate disposition with Quality Engineering. Support delta and partial FAI requirements driven by engineering, process, tooling, or equipment changes; coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, and Quality Engineering to resolve drawing ambiguities or measurement challenges uncovered during FAI. Develop and maintain calibration procedures, work instructions, and FAI records in accordance with
AS9100/ISO
9001 and applicable customer requirements. Maintain calibration and FAI records/status in the quality management system, and support internal, external, and registrar (AS9100/ISO) audits by providing records, certificates, and traceability documentation on request. Maintain a clean, organized calibration/inspection lab and proper storage/handling of gauges, standards, and measurement equipment. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certificate or associate degree in metrology, quality, electronics, or a related field preferred. 2+ years of experience in calibration and/or AS9102 First Article Inspection, preferably in aerospace, defense, or precision manufacturing. Working knowledge of calibration standards and traceability requirements (NIST, ISO/IEC 17025 concepts) and
AS9100/ISO 9001
requirements for equipment control and product release. Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T callouts; experience ballooning drawings preferred. Hands-on experience with precision measurement equipment (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, torque wrenches, pressure gauges, multimeters, optical comparators); CMM experience a plus. Experience with calibration management software and/or quality software/ERP systems for tracking equipment status, records, and FAI data. Strong attention to detail, organizational and documentation discipline, and ability to maintain accurate, audit-ready records and multi-page inspection packages. Basic troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude for minor equipment repairs and adjustments. Effective written communication skills to document findings clearly for internal and customer review. U.S. Person status is required due to ITAR/export control requirements on certain programs. Working Conditions | Physical Requirements This position is performed primarily in a climate-controlled calibration/metrology/inspection lab, with regular time spent on the manufacturing floor retrieving and returning equipment and supporting First Article Inspection activities. Requires close visual and detail-oriented work, fine motor precision, extended periods at an inspection station, and occasional lifting of test equipment. Standard PPE required in production areas.
