Job Title:
Electrical Substation Engineer Job Description As an Electrical Substation Engineer, you will join a collaborative team of power professionals dedicated to designing and delivering high-voltage substation projects across the country. Working under the direction of experienced professional engineers and project managers, you will help develop technical designs, perform electrical calculations, and support project execution from initial concept through construction. This role offers structured mentorship, exposure to industry-leading tools and standards, and clear encouragement to grow toward professional licensure and advanced responsibilities. Responsibilities Assist in the design of high-voltage substations ranging from 69kV to 500kV, including physical layout, protection and control systems, grounding, and civil/structural elements. Prepare detailed engineering drawings using tools such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation to support substation design and construction. Perform electrical calculations, including short circuit, load flow, voltage drop, and grounding analysis, to ensure safe and reliable system performance. Support the development of one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams for substation projects. Collaborate with internal teams to integrate structural, civil, and environmental considerations into cohesive substation designs. Prepare technical specifications, bills of materials, and complete construction packages for project delivery. Assist in writing engineering reports, design narratives, and other client-facing deliverables that clearly communicate technical solutions. Maintain organized project documentation and consistently adhere to established quality control standards and procedures. Participate in project meetings with utilities, clients, and internal stakeholders to discuss design progress, requirements, and project coordination. Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, including civil, structural, and environmental, to ensure aligned and efficient project execution. Communicate effectively with experienced engineers and project managers to receive guidance, mentorship, and constructive feedback. Engage in on-the-job training and formal learning opportunities to continually build technical expertise in substation engineering and power delivery. Stay current with applicable industry standards and codes, including IEEE, NEC, and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), as well as utility-specific requirements. Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and innovation by sharing ideas, supporting process enhancements, and embracing new technologies. Support proposal development and project estimating activities as needed, contributing technical input and design assumptions. Assist with scheduling and project controls processes to help track progress, manage timelines, and support on-time project delivery. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Foundational knowledge of electrical engineering principles related to power delivery, transformer design, high-voltage equipment, and substation engineering. Experience using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation for electrical design and drafting. Familiarity with 3D modeling tools such as Revit, Civil 3D, or Inventor for physical and structural design (entry-level experience acceptable). Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to substations, including physical design, switchgear, relay equipment, switches, insulation, and lightning protection. Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Ability to develop and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain organized project documentation and follow quality control processes. Effective written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with engineers, designers, drafters, and project stakeholders. Ability to work under the direction of professional engineers and project managers while taking initiative and seeking feedback. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with SDS (Substation Design Suite) is a plus. Experience with 3D modeling platforms such as Revit, Civil 3D, or Inventor is a plus. Knowledge of construction practices and constructability considerations related to substation projects is preferred. Experience with proposal writing and project estimating is preferred. Working knowledge of scheduling and project controls processes is beneficial. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or a master's degree in engineering is a plus. Interest in obtaining EIT and Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, supported by encouragement and mentorship. General understanding of power delivery systems, substation physical design, and project management concepts. Ability to contribute positively to an energetic team culture focused on collaboration and continuous improvement. Work Environment You will work as part of a team of approximately 20 engineers, designers, and drafters in a growing office located in Lake Mary, FL, just north of Orlando. The team is relocating to a larger office space in Lake Mary, reflecting ongoing growth and investment in the substation engineering group. The environment is collaborative, with a youthful team culture that emphasizes mentorship, professional development, and open communication. You will work under the direction of licensed professional engineers, with clear encouragement and support to pursue your EIT and PE credentials. The role involves regular use of industry-standard engineering and drafting tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and 3D modeling software, as well as adherence to IEEE, NEC, and NESC standards. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lake Mary, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $33.65 - $38.46/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
