Job Description

Summary/Objective:
Support the needs of the Engineering Department in planning, coding, testing and implementation of software design for assigned projects in the field of Automation and Robotics.
Essential Functions:
(This description is not all inclusive, other duties may be assigned): Lead Automation, Software and Controls Engineers to achieve i2i goals. Review PLC, and HMI architecture of the team throughout the design process to ensure i2i standards are followed and for ensure functionality for the application. Provides timing estimates to program/project manager for scheduling. Drives and supports team to maintain project schedules Identify opportunities to productize i2i designs and software to add additional revenue streams to i2i. Build a collaborative team to grow i2i programming capabilities. Expand the i2i software library with re-usable code modules to reduce development time Collaborates with management team to address broad company issues and opportunities Document design approaches/standards to facilitate rapid spin-up of new team members Takes customer requirements and develops robust software Coordinates with Mechanical Design team to support design of automated systems Provides recommendations for control components selections and approaches to mechanical team Read and interprets planning documents, existing code and supporting documentation Develops code for robotic systems used in various applications and integrates communication with other controls systems as required. Writes object-oriented code (typically in the Visual Basic or C# language) with specific guidance on the necessary functionality of the code for custom software applications. Debugs existing bugs and researches methods to improve software performance and reliability Electrical/sensory debugging as related to integration and testing. Knowledge about machine vision programming, optics and lighting techniques. Understand process flow conceptually in early design phases and recommends approaches to build a more robust machine/process. Documentation (Manuals, flow-charts, timing diagrams) Assists with system deployment and validation at customer facilities Recommends solutions for instrumentation necessary for robust process control or machine sequencing. Researches and tests methods to integrate communication with off the shelf devices into the software architecture. Develops intuitive user interfaces using various industry standard HMI/GOT hardware and software to meet project needs. Develops machine logic/control software on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) using a combination of ladder logic, functional block diagrams and script languages. Configures control devices including drives for motors (Servo, AC, DC), field bus communication protocols, safety controllers and remote IO blocks. Develops code to perform a variety of machine vision tasks. Manages existing code base and software IP library for products developed. Assists with system design, build and hands-on testing as required. Adhere to all workplace safety laws, regulations, standards, and practices.

Physical Requirements:

Travel:
Requires travel within the New England area for site visits and install support (typically return home after) Occasional travel outside new England area for 2-5 days at time for customer installs, reviews and site visits. Typically 3-4 trips per year.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with programming robotic systems PLC ladder logic and HMI Programming experience in Allen Bradley Studio 5000 Ability to structure code for future benefit, readability/maintainability and develop robust machine control systems. Ability to set standards and timelines for work of employees under their supervision.
Preferred Education and Experience:
5+ Years of experience in automation, machine design or relevant field. Management/lead experience with small teams Ability to train and develop junior staff members. Software experience with Visual Basic and/or C# Object oriented programming experience. Beckhoff TwinCat Experience/working knowledge Experience on other PLC platforms (Connected Components, Mitsubishi GX Works, Siemens, Omron, etc.) Electrical assembly or troubleshooting Understanding of basic mechanical design principles.
