Job Description

Position Summary The Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of instrumentation and process control systems throughout the manufacturing facility. This position ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production equipment by maintaining accurate measurement and control systems while supporting plant optimization, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives. Key Responsibilities Design, install, configure, and maintain process instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, flow, level, weight, and analytical instruments. Develop and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs for instrumentation and control equipment. Troubleshoot and repair instrumentation, PLC, HMI, VFD, and process control systems to minimize production downtime. Perform calibration of field instruments and ensure compliance with quality and regulatory standards. Support production by identifying root causes of instrumentation failures and implementing permanent corrective actions. Work closely with Electrical, Mechanical, Production, and Technical departments to improve equipment reliability and process performance. Assist with commissioning and startup of new production lines, equipment, and automation systems. Develop and update P&IDs, instrument loop drawings, wiring diagrams, calibration records, and technical documentation. Manage instrumentation projects, including equipment selection, installation, contractor coordination, budgeting, and scheduling. Evaluate new instrumentation technologies to improve product quality, efficiency, and operating costs. Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, NEC, environmental regulations, and company safety policies. Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on process optimization, energy reduction, and reliability improvements. Maintain spare parts inventories for critical instrumentation and control equipment. Provide technical training to maintenance and production personnel on instrumentation and control systems. Participate in root cause analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and reliability improvement activities. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Minimum of 3-5 years of instrumentation or process control experience in a manufacturing or chemical processing environment. Experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or equivalent). Experience with HMI, SCADA, VFDs, servo systems, and industrial communication networks. Knowledge of process control loops, PID tuning, and automation systems. Familiarity with calibration procedures and instrumentation standards. Strong understanding of electrical drawings, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and control schematics. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CMMS maintenance software. Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication, organizational, and project management abilities. Preferred Qualifications Experience in plastics, chemical, extrusion, calendering, or continuous manufacturing processes. Knowledge of distributed control systems (DCS). ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or equivalent certification. Experience with industrial Ethernet, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, or DeviceNet communications. Familiarity with vision systems, thickness measurement systems, and automated inspection equipment. Physical Requirements Ability to work in an industrial manufacturing environment. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work around operating production equipment while following all safety procedures. Available for emergency call-ins and occasional weekend or after-hours support. Performance Expectations Maximize equipment reliability and uptime. Reduce instrumentation-related downtime. Improve process stability and product quality. Complete preventive maintenance and calibration on schedule. Support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives. Maintain a safe working environment while meeting all regulatory requirements.
