Electrical Engineer

Job Description

To apply standard engineering practices and techniques in all phases of planning, design, staking, construction, operation and maintenance of the Cooperative's transmission and distribution system and substation facilities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to, the following: Design and oversee overhead and underground engineering projects, such as subdivision design, line relocations and upgrades, reconductoring projects, VDOT projects, and work plan projects. Assist with preparing cost estimates, staking sheets and detailed diagrams using the Cooperative's electronic staking program, as required, for overhead and underground line construction. Assist staking engineers with load calculations, equipment sizing, easement preparation, joint use attachments, VDOT permitting, cost estimates, and preparation of staking sheets and detailed diagrams using the Cooperative's electronic staking program. Provide technical support to cooperative staff for all engineering-related software, such as Milsoft, Lightable, PoleForeman, etc. Assist with the preparation of engineering studies that improve the operation and reliability of the Cooperative's electric distribution system. These studies include long range and construction work plans, environmental reports, power factor correction, sectionalizing, load balancing, line loss, and reliability studies; spill prevention plans; and small generator interconnects. Assist with updating and maintenance of the Cooperative's electric system model Assist with procurement, inspection, testing, and maintenance of substation equipment, breakers, capacitors, reclosers, regulators, transformers, electronic controls and related equipment as required. Assist with investigating and making recommendations to resolve power quality complaints. Assist with managing member distributed generator interconnections for net metering. Maintain knowledge related to Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) construction standards and specifications. Participate in on-duty rotation as a Duty Supervisor. Perform in emergency situations as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Experience in power engineering and/or related field desirable. Must have the ability to meet and deal with the public in a highly creditable manner. Must have good written and oral communication skills and project a professional image. Must be able to accurately operate computer, calculator, fax and similar office machines and to operate a telephone and two-way radio in a competent, professional manner. Physical Requirements Required to pass a pre-employment drug screening. Typical office job. Essentially desk work. Some walking, standing, sitting, reaching and bending. Job may necessitate the occasional lifting and carrying of heavy objects. Working Conditions Works in a clean, well-lit, heated, and ventilated office. May make periodic visits to field work sites. Some exposure to dirt, water, and weather conditions.
