Job Description
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) seeks an Electronics Engineer to design, develop, and optimize RF, microwave, and digital electronics for world-class radio telescopes. You will translate scientific requirements into robust hardware, support prototyping, testing, and integration, and troubleshoot complex signal chains in observatory systems. Working in a collaborative, research-focused environment, you'll partner with astronomers, engineers, and software teams to enhance instrument performance and reliability, support upgrades, and document designs while contributing to cutting-edge astrophysics and telecommunications technology. Responsibilities Design and develop RF, microwave, and digital electronics for radio telescope systems. Translate scientific and system requirements into detailed hardware specifications. Prototype, test, and validate electronic assemblies and subsystems. Integrate electronics into observatory signal chains and control systems. Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware performance issues. Perform analysis and simulation for RF, microwave, and high-speed digital designs. Document schematics, layouts, test procedures, and design decisions. Collaborate closely with astronomers, software, and systems engineers on instrument upgrades. Support commissioning, maintenance, and reliability improvements of observatory equipment. Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering tools, methods, and standards.
