Job Title:
MEP Engineer Job Description The MEP Engineer designs and coordinates mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for a variety of building projects, including healthcare facilities, data centers, central plants, and municipal buildings. This role prepares detailed design documents and reports, applies industry codes and standards, and collaborates within an A/E firm environment on complex building projects with opportunities for professional growth and partnership. Responsibilities Design mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for building projects such as healthcare facilities, data centers, central plants, and municipal buildings. Prepare schematics, one-line diagrams, contract documents, and technical reports that clearly communicate design intent and system requirements. Develop electrical distribution systems, including grounding, back-up power, and general power distribution for a wide range of project types. Design lighting systems and controls, ensuring appropriate illumination levels, energy efficiency, and alignment with project specifications. Design fire alarm and lightning protection systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards. Perform mechanical design for HVAC systems, including load calculations, equipment selection, and layout coordination. Contribute to building design by coordinating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing elements within architectural and structural constraints. Use AutoCAD and Revit to produce accurate and coordinated drawings and models for MEP systems. Apply NEC and ASHRAE standards in the design and review of electrical and mechanical systems. Collaborate with project teams in an A/E firm environment to ensure integrated and efficient building systems. Support the preparation of documentation required for certifications and regulatory compliance. Travel to job sites as needed to support design coordination, field verification, and project meetings. Essential Skills 5+ years of experience in one or more MEP trades, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or fire protection. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering. Proficiency in AutoCAD for creating and modifying MEP drawings. Experience designing electrical distribution systems, including grounding, back-up power, and general power distribution. Experience in lighting design and control for building projects. Experience designing fire alarm and lightning protection systems. Mechanical design experience, including HVAC system design and building mechanical systems. Experience in plumbing and fire protection design for building projects. Strong knowledge of NEC (National Electrical Code) and its application in electrical design. Experience with building design and coordination of MEP systems within an A/E firm environment. Proficiency with Revit for MEP modeling and coordination. EIT or PE credential (Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer). Familiarity with ASHRAE standards for mechanical and HVAC design. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on diverse project types such as healthcare facilities, data centers, central plants, and municipal buildings. Ability to prepare detailed schematics, one-line diagrams, and contract documents with a high level of accuracy. Strong report writing skills to document design decisions, calculations, and system performance. Interest in pursuing additional professional certificates, with support available for certificate costs. Desire to grow within an A/E firm environment, including the potential opportunity to become a partner over time. Ability to work on multiple project types simultaneously and manage priorities effectively. Team-oriented mindset and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams. Commitment to staying current with industry standards and best practices in MEP design. Work Environment This role is based onsite in New York, with work occurring primarily in office settings and occasional travel to job sites. Mechanical and electrical candidates with 5+ years of experience can work out of the New York City office. The firm maintains offices in New York City and Long Island, both located in convenient areas, including walking distance from public transit such as the LIRR for the Long Island headquarters. The environment is that of an A/E firm where engineers typically enjoy a collaborative, professional atmosphere, working with AutoCAD, Revit, and other design tools on a variety of project types. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of NY, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
