Job Description

Blue Cross Arena is seeking a dependable and motivated Engineer to assist with the operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of building systems and equipment. This position plays a key role in maintaining the safe and efficient operation of the facility during events and non-event days while ensuring proper building, HVAC, refrigeration, and ice conditions are maintained at all times. Position Information Part-time seasonal position. This position is active during the Rochester Americans hockey season while ice is maintained in the arena. The season typically begins in September and generally runs through May, with the potential to extend into June depending on playoff schedules and other arena programming. Various shifts are available, including first, second, and third shifts, based on operational and event needs. Candidates must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and event-driven schedules as required. Essential Responsibilities Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, boiler, and mechanical systems throughout the facility. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on facility systems and equipment. Conduct routine inspections and building rounds to ensure all systems and equipment are operating properly. Monitor and maintain building air temperatures, ice temperatures, and overall ice conditions to ensure arena standards are met. Assist with the operation and monitoring of chillers, boilers, refrigeration, and ice-making equipment. Troubleshoot and repair facility issues including lighting, plumbing fixtures, and general building components. Respond to maintenance emergencies and facility service requests in a timely manner. Support event operations before, during, and after events as needed. Maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records. Coordinate with Operations staff, contractors, and vendors when necessary. Ensure compliance with all facility safety procedures and operational policies. Assist with general facility upkeep and additional duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Electrical experience required. Experience with preventive and corrective maintenance required. Familiarity with chillers, boilers, refrigeration systems, and HVAC equipment required. Pipe fitting experience preferred. Chemical treatment knowledge preferred. EPA Universal Certification preferred. City of Rochester Stationary Engineer (S-3) and Refrigeration Engineer (R-4) licenses preferred. Local 158 union membership preferred. Candidates not currently in Local 158 will be required to join upon employment. Experience in facility maintenance, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical systems, or related trades preferred. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and facility issues. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and event-driven schedules. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders and work in elevated areas. Ability to work in varying temperatures, including ice arena environments. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in an arena, stadium, entertainment venue, or large facility. Experience operating and maintaining ice arena refrigeration systems.
