Pay:
$20.00 per hour Job type: Paid temporary internship, hourly and nonexempt
Duration:
Approximately 16 weeks
Schedule:
Approximately 24-32 hours per week during active production hours About the Internship Hot Grabba is seeking an Industrial Engineering student to help us understand, measure, and improve our complete tobacco production and processing system. This hands-on internship has two primary objectives: Measure the time, movement, delays, and operational variation associated with our production and processing activities. Map and analyze those processes to identify bottlenecks, internal weaknesses, external threats, waste, and practical improvement opportunities. The assignment will cover all major process families, including: Grabba Chips production Bottling Packing and packaging Whole Leaf preparation and packing Raw-material receiving, conditioning, staging, and internal movement Inspection, quality holds, rework, cleaning, changeovers, waste handling, and finished-goods movement You will work primarily on the production floor with Operations, Production, Processing, Quality, Safety, HR, and experienced employees. This is a supervised learning role. The intern will collect and analyze information but will not independently establish employee quotas or approve process changes. What You Will Do Build a master inventory and end-to-end map of Hot Grabba's production and processing activities. Create SIPOCs, current-state flowcharts, movement or spaghetti diagrams, and proposed future-state maps. Define process boundaries, units of output, work elements, quality checkpoints, delay codes, and measurement rules. Design and conduct representative time-and-motion studies and work-sampling observations. Measure cycle time, touch time, waiting, setup, changeover, cleaning, inspection, rework, replenishment, transportation, employee movement, material handling, queues, and interruptions. Analyze process variation, bottlenecks, first-pass yield, rework, scrap, demonstrated capability, sustainable capacity, and the conditions affecting performance. Evaluate proposed production-rate targets objectively and communicate what the evidence supports, including uncertainty and limitations. Identify internal process weaknesses and external threats and connect them to specific process steps and operational effects. Develop prioritized improvement proposals supported by data, future-state maps, expected benefits, risks, and validation methods. Support approved low-risk improvement trials and compare results with the established baseline. Prepare weekly progress updates and a final presentation, editable process-map library, time-and-motion database, and implementation roadmap. What You Will Learn How to conduct work-measurement studies in an active manufacturing environment. How to translate production-floor observations into defensible process data. How to create and validate current-state and future-state process maps. How material condition, quality, layout, equipment, work methods, and external dependencies affect operational performance. How to present improvement recommendations to production employees and company leadership. Required Qualifications Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or a closely related field. Coursework or project experience in work measurement, process mapping, engineering statistics, manufacturing systems, quality, operations, or process improvement. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, including formulas, pivot tables, charts, and data cleaning. Ability to work on-site and spend extended periods observing production operations while following all safety and PPE requirements. Strong analytical, organizational, documentation, and communication skills. Ability to work objectively, protect confidential information, and communicate findings that may differ from initial assumptions. Legal authorization to work in the United States. Preferred Qualifications Junior, senior, or graduate-level standing. Eligibility to receive academic credit or access to a faculty advisor. Coursework or project experience with Lean, Six Sigma, DMAIC, statistical process control, facility layout, ergonomics, methods engineering, simulation, or root-cause analysis. Experience with Visio, Lucidchart, Minitab, Power BI, Tableau, R, Python, or similar mapping and analytical tools. Previous exposure to manufacturing, consumer packaged goods, agriculture, tobacco, regulated products, or high-variation manual production. English and Spanish bilingual skills are helpful but not required. Successful Candidates Will Demonstrate Curiosity and willingness to learn directly from production employees. Respectful, neutral observation and interviewing skills. Attention to data quality, sampling limitations, and process variation. The ability to distinguish a process problem from an employee-performance assumption. Strong safety awareness, sound judgment, and professional integrity. The ability to organize a multi-process project and complete clear weekly deliverables. Work Environment This position is divided between an office or workstation and an active manufacturing environment. The role may require extended standing and walking, repeated observation, use of approved measurement tools, exposure to normal facility noise, proximity to production equipment, and use of required personal protective equipment. The work involves proximity to tobacco leaf, tobacco-related dust or residue, and humidified or steam-treated tobacco. Employees must follow all applicable safety, hygiene, sanitation, and product-handling procedures. Reasonable accommodations will be considered for qualified individuals. Equal Employment Opportunity Hot Grabba LLC provides equal employment opportunities to qualified applicants and employees without unlawful discrimination. Employment decisions are based on job-related qualifications, performance, and business needs. Applicants who require a reasonable accommodation during the application or interview process may contact Human Resources. This paid internship is designed to provide supervised educational and professional experience. Completion of the internship does not guarantee continued or permanent employment.
