Koppel, PA Position Summary The Design Engineer is responsible for developing, designing, modifying, and supporting mechanical equipment, machinery, production systems, and plant layouts within a high-performance industrial manufacturing environment. This position combines machine design, mechanical engineering, plant layout, equipment integration, and 2D/3D CAD modeling to support manufacturing operations, equipment upgrades, process improvements, and capital projects. The Design Engineer works closely with engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, operations, safety, and project teams to develop practical, reliable, and cost-effective solutions. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on mechanical design experience and is proficient in AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and SolidWorks , with the ability to take a project from concept and layout through detailed design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning. Key Responsibilities Design and develop mechanical machinery, equipment, fixtures, tooling, material-handling systems, and production-support equipment. Create and maintain detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and SolidWorks. Develop machine concepts, assemblies, components, mechanisms, and equipment modifications based on operational requirements. Perform plant and facility layouts, including equipment placement, production lines, material flow, access areas, maintenance clearances, and operator workspaces. Develop general arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and detail drawings. Convert conceptual designs and engineering requirements into manufacturable mechanical designs. Evaluate existing machinery and identify opportunities for equipment improvements, modernization, automation, reliability, and safety. Work with manufacturing and maintenance personnel to identify equipment problems and develop practical engineering solutions. Collaborate with project engineers, production personnel, maintenance teams, contractors, fabricators, and equipment suppliers. Prepare bills of materials (BOMs), parts lists, equipment specifications, and other engineering documentation. Review designs for manufacturability, maintainability, safety, functionality, and cost. Support the selection and specification of mechanical components, including bearings, shafts, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, cylinders, structural components, guarding, and related equipment. Develop and update plant drawings, equipment layouts, floor plans, and engineering documentation. Participate in field measurements and site surveys to verify existing equipment and facility conditions. Support installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and modification of designed equipment. Review vendor drawings and equipment documentation for compliance with project requirements. Coordinate with contractors and suppliers during fabrication and installation activities. Ensure engineering designs comply with applicable company standards, safety requirements, engineering practices, and relevant codes. Maintain accurate CAD models, drawings, revisions, and engineering documentation. Participate in capital improvement and continuous improvement projects. Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, production efficiency, ergonomics, safety, and material flow. Provide technical support to manufacturing and maintenance teams as needed. Machine Design Responsibilities The Design Engineer will be expected to demonstrate practical knowledge of mechanical machine design, including: Mechanical assemblies and mechanisms Shafts, bearings, couplings, gears, and drive systems Conveyors and material-handling equipment Hydraulic and pneumatic systems Machine guarding and safety devices Structural frames and supports Fixtures, tooling, and workholding systems Motors, gearboxes, and mechanical power transmission Welding and fabricated structures Machine components and replacement parts Equipment modifications and upgrades Design for manufacturability and maintainability Plant Layout Responsibilities Develop and maintain facility and production-area layouts. Plan equipment locations based on production flow, material handling, safety, maintenance access, and available space. Develop layouts for new equipment installations and production-line modifications. Coordinate equipment footprints, utility requirements, access requirements, and maintenance clearances. Evaluate material flow and identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary movement and improve operational efficiency. Incorporate existing equipment and infrastructure into new layouts. Support plant expansion, equipment relocation, and facility improvement projects. Perform field verification and update drawings to reflect actual site conditions. CAD & Engineering Software Strong proficiency in the following software is preferred: AutoCAD — 2D drafting, plant layouts, equipment layouts, fabrication drawings, and engineering documentation. Autodesk Inventor — 3D mechanical design, assemblies, part modeling, drawing creation, and design documentation. SolidWorks — 3D part and assembly modeling, detailed drawings, mechanical design, and design modifications. Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience with ERP, PLM, PDM, or engineering document-management systems is a plus. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred. 3+ years of mechanical design or engineering experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or production environment. Demonstrated experience with machine design and mechanical equipment development . Demonstrated experience developing plant layouts and equipment layouts . Strong AutoCAD experience. Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor and/or SolidWorks. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, equipment specifications, technical documentation, and manufacturing requirements. Understanding of mechanical tolerances, materials, fabrication methods, machining, welding, and manufacturing processes. Ability to perform field measurements and translate existing conditions into accurate CAD drawings. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project-management skills. Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and priorities. Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, maintenance, and operations personnel. Preferred Qualifications Experience in steel, tubular products, metals, manufacturing, energy, or other heavy industrial environments. Experience designing production machinery or automated equipment. Experience with large-scale industrial equipment and material-handling systems. Experience with plant expansions, equipment relocations, or production-line installations. Familiarity with mechanical power transmission systems. Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
