Beverage Production, Operations & Fermentation Bioprocessing Technician Instructor Position Overview MiraCosta College Community Education & Workforce Development delivers accelerated, industry-driven training programs designed to prepare students for in-demand careers. Located at MiraCosta College's Technology Career Institute (TCI) in Carlsbad, our programs serve the healthcare, advanced manufacturing, engineering, skilled trades, and production sectors through hands-on, skills-based instruction aligned with employer needs. We are seeking an experienced Beverage Production, Operations & Fermentation Bioprocessing Technician Instructor who is passionate about preparing students for careers in beverage manufacturing, brewing operations, fermentation, quality assurance, and production environments. This position combines technical instruction, hands-on laboratory and production training, student mentorship, and industry-aligned curriculum delivery in a fast-paced workforce training environment. The Beverage Production, Operations & Fermentation Bioprocessing Technician Program prepares students for entry-level careers supporting breweries, beverage manufacturers, fermentation facilities, and related production operations. Through classroom instruction, hands-on production activities, laboratory exercises, technical projects, and industry work experience, students develop the technical, operational, and professional skills necessary to succeed in modern beverage manufacturing environments. Instruction includes beverage production processes, brewing fundamentals, fermentation science, sanitation and cleaning procedures, packaging and canning operations, quality assurance principles, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), HACCP awareness, lean manufacturing concepts, production documentation, troubleshooting methodologies, workplace safety, and continuous improvement practices. The ideal candidate brings significant beverage production or fermentation manufacturing experience, a commitment to safety and quality, and a passion for preparing the next generation of beverage production professionals. This position is supervised by the Program Supervisor and plays a key role in maintaining program excellence, industry alignment, student success, and employer partnerships. Responsibilities Deliver engaging, hands-on instruction aligned with beverage manufacturing and production industry standards. Provide instruction in brewing operations, fermentation processes, packaging systems, sanitation, quality assurance, and production workflows. Teach students beverage production fundamentals, raw material handling, ingredient preparation, process monitoring, and production documentation. Train students in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), sanitation procedures, HACCP awareness, food safety principles, and workplace safety. Demonstrate proper operation of brewing, fermentation, packaging, cleaning, and production equipment. Teach students to interpret production documentation, batch records, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality records. Guide students through laboratory exercises, brewing activities, fermentation monitoring, packaging operations, troubleshooting exercises, and technical projects. Incorporate lean manufacturing concepts including 5S, continuous improvement, waste reduction, workplace organization, and production efficiency. Introduce quality assurance concepts including sampling, process verification, sanitation verification, and product consistency. Monitor student progress and provide coaching, mentoring, technical feedback, and career guidance. Maintain a safe, organized, clean, and industry-standard production and laboratory environment. Collaborate with the Program Supervisor regarding equipment maintenance, instructional materials, laboratory improvements, and program operations. Recommend curriculum updates based on emerging beverage manufacturing technologies, employer feedback, and industry trends. Maintain accurate student attendance, evaluations, records, and required program documentation. Prepare students for successful completion of their required industry work experience. Support student development of professionalism, communication, teamwork, leadership, and workplace readiness skills. Build and maintain relationships with breweries, beverage manufacturers, fermentation companies, distributors, and industry partners. Participate in advisory committee meetings, industry events, tours, trainings, recruitment activities, and departmental initiatives. Collaborate with fellow instructors to maintain instructional consistency and high-quality student support across TCI programs. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum five years of professional experience in beverage manufacturing, brewing, fermentation, food production, beverage operations, quality assurance, production supervision, or a closely related manufacturing environment. Experience with commercial brewing systems, beverage production equipment, fermentation processes, or industrial food and beverage manufacturing operations. Strong understanding of brewing science, fermentation, sanitation practices, quality systems, and production operations. Working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), food safety principles, HACCP, sanitation procedures, and production documentation. Experience with packaging, canning, bottling, kegging, or related production equipment is highly desirable. Ability to teach and demonstrate hands-on technical skills in a production laboratory environment. Strong communication, organization, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively mentor and support adult learners in an accelerated workforce training environment. Commitment to student success, workplace safety, professionalism, continuous improvement, and industry-aligned education. Preferred Qualifications Experience in craft brewing, beverage manufacturing, kombucha production, coffee roasting or cold brew production, fermentation sciences, or food manufacturing. Experience supervising production teams or training manufacturing employees. Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles, quality systems, and continuous improvement methodologies. Industry certifications related to brewing, food safety, quality assurance, sanitation, or manufacturing. Experience developing training materials or workforce education programs.
