Part-Time Engineering InternBirmingham, AL Sirius Staffing is hiring a Part-Time Engineering Intern for an opportunity in Birmingham, Alabama, supporting a large pharmaceutical manufacturing site.
Schedule:
This role will work up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester and up to 40 hours per week between semesters. Position OverviewThe Engineering Intern supports the development of polymer-based biomaterials for medical device applications, from early feasibility through product launch. This position provides hands-on experience with polymer processing, laboratory operations, material characterization, data analysis, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration within a regulated engineering environment. ResponsibilitiesSupport the development of polymer-based biomaterials for medical device applicationsAssist with mechanical, thermal, and material characterization testing using standard laboratory and analytical equipmentConduct mechanical, thermal, and material characterization testing using polymer science, processing, and analytical techniquesGain hands-on experience with polymer processing techniques, including extrusion, injection molding, and compoundingOperate laboratory and manufacturing equipment, including injection molding, extrusion, and advanced microscopy and spectroscopy toolsSupport experimental design and present findings to internal and external stakeholdersRecord, analyze, document, and report experimental data and resultsMaintain accurate records of experimental procedures and resultsFollow SOPs, safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and laboratory best practicesContribute to biological evaluation of biomaterials, including in vitro testingPerform detailed laboratory work requiring analytical and physical engagement, including extended computer use and hands-on material handlingBuild foundational skills in laboratory operations, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration QualificationsPursuing or holding a BSc or MSc in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific disciplineOne or more years of relevant laboratory experience; an advanced degree in a relevant scientific discipline is preferred, or a demonstrated level of performance and capabilityAcademic knowledge of polymer science, polymer processing, and analytical techniquesAbility to apply academic knowledge of polymer science, processing, and analytical techniques in a laboratory environmentConfidence using Microsoft Office applicationsStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work effectively within a highly diverse teamExposure to sterilization processes is considered an assetMust be eligible to work for any US Employer without sponsorship now and/or in the future.
