Mechanical Engineer, R&D Automation Joining our team might just be the best bond you ever make. At CreateMe, we're done with thread. We build the robots and the glue that are changing how clothes get made, one seam at a time. Every day, our team is solving problems the industry has never solved before, creating technology that reduces waste, shortens supply chains, and changes what's possible in manufacturing. We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our R&D team in Newark, CA. You'll design, build, test, and improve the industrial automation systems that bring our technology to life. This is a hands-on role where you'll take ideas from CAD to the shop floor, troubleshoot real equipment, and turn early concepts into reliable, repeatable manufacturing processes. If you love building things, solving complex problems, and seeing your designs come to life, you'll fit right in. What you'll do: Design mechanical systems, assemblies, fixtures, tooling, machine modules, and prototype equipment for automated manufacturing applications. Develop concepts, CAD models, detailed drawings, BOMs, tolerance schemes, and design documentation for parts and assemblies that will be built, tested, and iterated quickly. Work hands-on with prototypes and production-intent equipment: assemble, test, debug, measure performance, identify failure modes, and drive design improvements. Support early-stage process R&D by helping design experiments, build test setups, evaluate process windows, capture learnings, and translate promising concepts into more robust equipment designs. Collaborate closely with controls, software, manufacturing, process, quality, and technician teams to integrate mechanical designs into full automation systems. Design for reliability, serviceability, manufacturability, safety, operator usability, and repeatable production performance — not just for proof-of-concept function. Create practical engineering documentation, including drawings, test plans, setup notes, assembly guidance, troubleshooting notes, and design rationale. Work with internal teams and outside vendors/machine shops to fabricate, inspect, modify, and improve mechanical components and assemblies. Participate in equipment bring-up, pilot builds, validation runs, and production-readiness work by helping diagnose mechanical, process, material, and integration issues. Take ownership of well-scoped mechanical design projects while learning to handle larger system-level scope over time.
What you bring:
A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline, plus 2-5 years of relevant mechanical design experience ideally involving automation equipment, industrial machinery, manufacturing equipment, robotics, test equipment, fixtures, tooling, or electromechanical systems.. You know your way around CAD. You can turn an idea into clean, detailed, buildable designs, drawings, assemblies, and documentation. You understand how machines work. You have a solid foundation in mechanisms, motion, structures, materials, tolerancing, fasteners, bearings, shafts, and sensor and actuator interfaces. You're a builder at heart. You enjoy getting your hands on hardware, assembling prototypes, testing mechanisms, and figuring out what needs to change. You love a good engineering challenge. You use first principles, data, and observation to identify root causes and develop practical solutions. You thrive in the unknown. You're comfortable in an R&D environment where requirements evolve, designs change, and experimentation is part of the process. You have a sense of ownership which drives your ability to move your projects forward with a keen eye to meeting deliverable deadlines. Bonus points for experience with textile or soft-goods handling, pneumatics, vacuum systems, servo or linear motion, end effectors, GD&T, DFM/DFA, FEA, machine safety, equipment commissioning, PLCs, robotics, or vision systems. What you'll find here: Collaborate & Communicate
- Every voice matters. We believe the best solutions come from engineers, technicians, and production teammates working together, sharing ideas, and learning from one another. First Run
- We're building technology that has never existed before. You'll have the freedom to experiment, challenge assumptions, learn from what doesn't work, and help turn bold ideas into working machines. Measured to the Millimeter
- Close enough isn't good enough. We sweat the details, take pride in precision, and believe a great design should work reliably, not just once, but over and over again. Made to Matter
- Your work has a purpose. We're creating technology that reduces waste, shortens supply chains, and changes how clothes are made. You'll take ownership of your designs and see their impact on the production floor. Seamless Support
- We invest in our people through comprehensive wellness benefits (medical, dental, vision, life), 401(k), PTO, training, and opportunities to grow your technical expertise and take on bigger engineering challenges.
