Your Opportunity This position will be working in the field of hydropower, supporting both new construction projects as well as refurbishment/upgrade projects, with a focus on pump-storage. Candidate shall possess an in-depth knowledge of hydropower/pump-storage main powertrain equipment including pump-turbines, motor-generators, large valves and the required ancillary equipment. Experience may be mechanical, electrical and/or operations based, but a well-balanced knowledge of the three is preferred. Candidates shall possess strong computer skills, strong writing and communication skills and shall work well in a team environment. The candidate will work in coordination with other senior level engineers and construction/outage managers and will work on multidisciplinary projects. This position is on our turbine team, with a focus supporting commercial and technical integration during the implementation phase of OEM contracts, including early development, design, manufacturing and field erection. The position requires some travel and possibly extended duration at client facilities. Your Key Responsibilities
  • Work with other engineering disciplines and professionals in the coordination of projects under the direction of a senior project manager and project engineer. Extensive interface with Client project managers, plant managers, and other stakeholders will be required.
  • Support during preparation of bidding documents and negotiation with OEMs for design, supply and installation of hydropower/pump-storage main power train equipment.
  • Perform planning studies with a particular focus on detailed installation schedules (and/or outage schedules for rehabs) including design, manufacturing and construction phases related to hydropower/pump-storage power plants for domestic and international projects.
  • Experience with integration of OEM schedules with Civil construction contracts (or with plant operations in the case of plant/unit outages)
  • Management of OEM contracts including: monthly progress tracking and reporting, shop quality inspection programs, manufacturing expediting, site progress tracking and expediting and management of change order requests.
  • Perform condition assessment of power plant mechanical equipment, including turbines, generators, and ancillary equipment.
  • Perform risk assessment, ranking and life cycle costing of hydropower/pump storage equipment replacement, repair and rehabilitation.
  • Perform technical reviews of vendor drawings, calculations, procedures, reports.
  • Provide site support for equipment commissioning and testing. Qualifications Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Ability to lead, participate and collaborate in project team settings and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • In-depth understanding of OEM contracts including technical and commercial provisions.
  • Knowledge of power plant Health and Safety requirements and PPE.
  • Knowledge of power plant equipment costs, manufacturing lead time and sourcing.
  • Experience with risk assessment, ranking of alternative, life cycles cost of mechanical equipment.
  • Experience in building new hydropower plants with pump storage (actual field experience preferred).
  • Hydropower rehabilitation experience including upgrade planning and design for existing hydropower facilities.
  • Experience providing support for hydropower planning / development of planning reports.
  • Understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering concepts in a hydropower plant and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
  • Understanding and experience interpreting FEA, CFD and 3D modeling programs into project implementation is a plus.
  • Requires proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and understanding critical path scheduling software such as Microsoft project and/or Primavera.
  • Experience in hydropower/pump-storage equipment design, commissioning, and testing, including pump-turbines, motor-generators, governing and excitations systems, unit starting systems, large valves, overhead cranes etc.
  • Experience with manufacturing methods, non-destructive examination, and witnessing shop inspections of hydro mechanical equipment.
  • Experience in project reports, budget and schedule management and client interaction such as client presentations, scoping and marketing.
  • Demonstrated strength in written and verbal communication. Education and Experience
  • Minimum of 25 years of related experience is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field is preferred.
With associate technical degree, an additional 5 years of experience is required. Typical office environment working with computers, remote or hybrid work may be considered. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather and can involve physically demanding site inspections inside water passages and generating equipment in tight and confined spaces. Travel typically between 30% to 60% of time.
