Job Description

8-12 Month Contract M-F Onsite Overview We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, test, and support mechanical subsystems for fire trucks and other specialty vehicles. This role is responsible for transforming product concepts into functional prototypes and production-ready designs while supporting advanced engineering, production design, product improvements, and issue resolution. The Mechanical Engineer will work cross-functionally with engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, quality, service, and sales teams to develop efficient, reliable, cost-effective, and compliant products. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical design experience, proficiency in SolidWorks, and the ability to analyze and resolve design, production, and field issues. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and support mechanical subsystems and components for fire trucks and related specialty vehicles. Develop, maintain, and ensure compliance with corporate, customer, and regulatory subsystem specifications and performance requirements. Create innovative hardware and integrated solutions that improve product quality, performance, reliability, and cost. Develop and monitor simulation, laboratory, and field validation and testing programs to verify product and component performance. Gather, analyze, and interpret test and performance data to support engineering decisions and product improvements. Participate in cross-functional teams to implement product and process improvements. Apply applicable vehicle regulations and industry standards, including FMVSS, SAE, NFPA, and other relevant requirements, to ensure compliant product designs. Create, maintain, and manage detailed engineering drawings, models, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using SolidWorks. Serve as a technical resource for Manufacturing, Purchasing, Service, Sales, and other internal teams to resolve technical questions and product issues. Collaborate with suppliers and Purchasing to evaluate new products, components, and materials and ensure received parts meet engineering and quality requirements. Investigate and resolve design, manufacturing, quality, and field performance issues. Develop and implement corrective actions in accordance with Quality Management System (QMS) procedures. Review quality audit records, customer returns, and product performance data to assess conformance to specifications and identify improvement opportunities. Support prototype development, production implementation, and engineering changes throughout the product lifecycle. Prioritize and manage multiple engineering assignments while effectively responding to urgent and unplanned technical issues. Prepare and present project updates, technical reports, and engineering status reports. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support business and operational needs. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. Experience in mechanical design, product development, manufacturing engineering, or a related engineering environment. Strong proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawings. Experience creating and maintaining engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs). Ability to interpret and work from engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, quality, service, and commercial teams. Preferred Qualifications Experience designing products for vehicles, heavy equipment, fire apparatus, trucks, or other mobile equipment. Knowledge of vehicle and product regulatory requirements, including FMVSS, SAE, and NFPA standards. Experience with prototype development, product validation, laboratory testing, and field testing. Familiarity with manufacturing processes, supplier collaboration, and component qualification. Experience working within a Quality Management System (QMS) and supporting corrective action activities. Knowledge of design for manufacturability, cost reduction, and continuous product improvement.
