Job Description
What You Will Do This position is for technician support to the Mechanical Design Engineering (MDE) group's Mechanical Team. This team is seeking a motivated mechanical technician to support LANSCE accelerator maintenance and upgrade operations. Successful candidates will also support these maintenance and upgrade operations in the field as needed. Responsibilities of the MDE Mechanical Team include but are not limited to; troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, electro-mechanical equipment, and operation of general shop tools and equipment. The team supports custom fabrications and provides engineering solutions to complex problems. The team and team members must multi-task to complete work for a variety of projects, order spare parts, maintain an on-line spares inventory and a maintenance database. The Mechanical Team also provides expert level support for crane, forklift and Mechanical Material Handling (MMH) operations around the site and laboratory. All members will be LANL qualified to perform crane and forklift operations. This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Engineered Systems Technician 3 $66,100 - $103,600 The successful candidate will join a team of technicians engaged in the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of LANSCE accelerator mechanical systems. This includes magnets, critical components, and structural elements. The team is also responsible for accelerator beamline alignments and tracking. The activities of this team extend beyond the accelerator to the support of other projects requiring assemblies and dis-assemblies. Engineered Systems Technician 4 $72,800 - $115,400 In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will need to provide demonstrated experience in alignment metrology. Skills working with Laser Alignment and Tracking systems and global reference systems are needed. Understanding of Reference Point Systems and Best-fit Alignment techniques is necessary.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:

Demonstrated experience operating hand tools and shop tools, (i.e. saws, drivers, ladders, etc.). Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians. Demonstrated knowledge of and a commitment to doing work safely and securely. Be capable and willing to work in radiation areas while adhering to ALARA principles. Demonstrated skills in using personal computers for word processing and spreadsheet data entry. Demonstrated ability to check, correct, and provide constructive feedback to designers and engineers. Performs design, construction, test, and checkout of test equipment and understands proper documentation, record keeping. Experience troubleshooting and implementing diagnostics techniques on a variety of mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical, and hydraulic systems. Ensures all work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements. Prepares required installation and/or repair documentation and maintains appropriate maintenance and repair logs. Monitors equipment efficiencies, including the determination of functional problems with test equipment and diagnostic tools. Proactively monitors equipment condition, logs, and diagnostics. Manages waste; identifies, labels and disposes of waste per required procedures; handles and stores hazardous materials in accordance with Laboratory and regulatory requirements. Uses advanced diagnostic tools under the direction of a senior technician. Assists senior technicians in developing and executing solutions to more complex technical issues. Independently develops solutions to routine technical problems of moderate scope and complexity. The individual will demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and repair problems on electro-mechanical systems of moderate complexity using standard diagnostic equipment, while referencing to OEM provided drawings, diagrams, specifications, schematics, and manuals. Performs moderately complex installation, maintenance, and repairs on equipment and systems. Applies a variety of methods, procedures, and techniques to lay out, install, align, repair, overhaul, and maintain various types of machinery, equipment and/or systems. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Additional Job Requirements for the Engineering System Technician 4: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: Demonstrated alignment metrology experience. Knowledge of various alignment techniques such as LASER Tracker and SpatialAnalyzer software. Perform design, construction, test and checkout of test equipment and understands proper documentation, record keeping. Recommends modifications to engineering designs as necessary. Conduct specialized bench-top testing in a development mode and determines methods or actions to correct malfunctions or design problems. Lead collaboration efforts with other facility representatives as required to support the safety/reliability of equipment/systems. Is self-motivated and can perform duties with minimal oversite. Uses advanced diagnostic tools with minimal direction from a senior technician. Develops solutions to technical problems of broad scope and complexity within the discipline. Applies knowledge of the job, and Laboratory policies and principles to complete a wide variety of tasks. Performs independent troubleshooting and diagnosis of failures or malfunctions in complex electro-mechanical systems. Coordinates equipment shutdown, in accordance with LOTO policy. Identifies, and replaces or repairs defective components as well as performs installation of new equipment. Safely and securely works with classified and/or hazardous materials. Participates in classified and hazardous materials pre-audits and audits. Responsible for the development or review of Integrated Work Documents (IWD), procedures, and work instructions. Coordinates hazard analysis team. Serves as the Person in Charge (PIC). Education/Experience at lower level : Associates degree in electromechanical/mechanical or vacuum technology and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. Education/Experience at higher level Position requires an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications:
Proven track record of contributing to high-impact R D projects through design, prototyping, and fabrication. Qualified crane and forklift operator. Experience in the fabrication of mechanical parts working from sketches, formal drawings, or oral instructions. Proficiency in the operational use of and calibration of optical tooling equipment, such as jig transits, sight levels, and theodolites. Design, fabrication, and/or maintenance of accelerator equipment. Possess active Q clearance. Position commitment:

• for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

New-Employment Drug Test:
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
