A Mechanical or Electrical Drafter prepares detailed drawings needed to manufacture or repair machinery and equipment, with dimensions and other specific engineering data. Uses computer aided design software. May create diagrams for products that include mechanical and electronic components, such as cars or computers, or prepare the diagrams used to install wiring and electrical equipment in buildings or in electrical distribution systems.
$30-40/hr We are seeking a detail-oriented, highly organized Mechanical Drafter to join our engineering team. In this role, you will play a key part in transforming conceptual designs and engineering sketches into precise 3D CAD models, detailed 2D manufacturing drawings, and accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs). The ideal candidate possesses strong hands-on proficiency in SolidWorks, a deep understanding of manufacturing processes, and rigorous expertise in BOM creation and lifecycle management. You will work closely with design engineers, purchasing, and shop-floor production to ensure designs are buildable, cost-effective, and error-free. Responsibilities Create detailed 3D part/assembly models and 2D production drawings using SolidWorks in accordance with
ANSI/ASME
drafting standards. Perform basic tolerance stack-up analyses and verify interference fits on complex mechanical assemblies. Generate, structure, and maintain accurate multi-level Bills of Materials (BOMs) within our PDM/PLM and ERP systems (e.g., SolidWorks PDM, SAP, Epicor). Specify off-the-shelf mechanical hardware, fasteners, pneumatic/hydraulic components, and raw materials with complete vendor part numbers. Collaborate with Procurement and Production to resolve BOM discrepancies, component obsolescence, or lead-time issues. Audit BOMs prior to manufacturing release to eliminate line-item errors, duplicate parts, and missing specifications. Assist the shop floor and quality assurance during prototype builds and first-article inspections to troubleshoot drafting or fitment issues. Help maintain drafting standards, template libraries, and component libraries within SolidWorks PDM. Qualifications Associate Degree in Computer-Aided Drafting/Design (CADD), Mechanical Technology, or equivalent trade school certification. (Relevant experience may substitute). 2-5+ years of practical experience in mechanical drafting within a manufacturing or engineering environment. Hands-on expertise with SolidWorks (3D modeling, sheet metal, weldments, surface modeling, and drawing generation). CSWA or CSWP certification is a strong plus. Proven experience creating, structuring, and managing mechanical BOMs across the product lifecycle.
