Position Overview :
We are seeking a highly motivated Mechatronics Engineer to join our R&D team in Carlsbad, CA. This hands-on role focuses on developing experimental systems, automation platforms, and test infrastructure that enable next-generation semiconductor thermal management technologies. The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical design skills with expertise in electronics, controls, automation, and prototyping. They should be comfortable designing in SolidWorks, building and troubleshooting test equipment, and turning new ideas into working hardware. We value engineers who are makers at heart. Whether through robotics, CNC machining, electronics, firmware, 3D printing, or other personal projects, curiosity, creativity, and hands-on problem solving are highly valued. The technologies developed in this role will form the foundation of future AEM products and manufacturing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, build, and operate custom electromechanical systems, automation solutions, R&D lab equipment and platforms supporting advanced R&D programs. Develop proof-of-concept systems and prototypes to evaluate new technologies, materials, manufacturing processes, and thermal management concepts. Translate research objectives into practical laboratory equipment, test setups, and experimental methodologies. Design mechanical components, fixtures, and assemblies using SolidWorks. Integrate sensors, actuators, electronics, embedded controllers, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems into functional research platforms. Conduct hands-on prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, validation, and continuous improvement of experimental systems. Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and scientific teams to advance novel technologies from concept through technical feasibility. Analyze experimental results and support DOE, root-cause analysis, and technology development activities. Coordinate with machining, fabrication, and prototyping resources to rapidly develop and deploy custom hardware. Maintain engineering documentation, CAD models, drawings, test procedures, and experimental records.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Minimum 5 years of experience designing, building, and troubleshooting electromechanical systems. Strong mechanical design skills with advanced proficiency in SolidWorks . Experience integrating mechanical systems, electronics, sensors, actuators, and control hardware. Working knowledge of electronics, instrumentation, control systems, and embedded hardware. Familiarity with embedded firmware development and microcontroller-based systems. Experience with manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, fabrication, additive manufacturing, and assembly techniques. Strong hands-on prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and debugging skills. Experience using laboratory instrumentation and test equipment. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a dynamic R&D environment
What Will Make You Stand Out:
Experience with robotics, automation equipment, semiconductor equipment, thermal systems, scientific instrumentation, or advanced manufacturing. Familiarity with firmware development using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar platforms. Knowledge of FEA, CFD, thermal analysis, or system modeling tools. Hands-on experience with CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping technologies. Experience working with materials characterization equipment or materials science development programs. Personal engineering projects involving robotics, automation, electronics, custom machinery, CNC equipment, or 3D printing. Startup, or early-stage technology development experience.
