JOB DESCRIPTION

The Metallurgical Laboratory Technician will apply knowledge in metallurgy to verify structural integrity of hardened steel and welded material meet or exceed customer specifications through performance of cut, etch, pickling, microscopic measurement, tensile, destruct, bend, and intrusion testing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Micro-cut and etch samples according to customer specifications related to testing; Mount, grind, and polish micro-samples in accordance with customer and ASTM specifications; Perform tensile testing and bend (compression) analysis using test equipment and software; Measure micro hardness and surface hardness using applicable testing equipment and software; Microstructure interpretation and measurement; Create measurement reports and presentations in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Report non-conforming material to management and quality team; Complete written reports; Operate plasma arc cutting machine; Maintain the gage calibration system for the Met Lab/Press area using applicable software; Ensure that testing and measuring equipment is maintained and in proper calibration; Maintain a clean and safe work environment; Cooperate with internal and external certification audits and customer audits, supporting site initiatives towards achieving and maintaining customer awards as well as quality and environmental certifications (IATF, TS, ISO); Adhere to Team Handbook, Quality, Safety, and Environmental standards, policies, and procedures; Assure all safety devices are properly in place and utilized, Lockout/Tagout procedures are adhered to, PPE is worn correctly at all times, and reporting of any near-misses, injuries, or accidents occurs immediately; Perform additional tasks as deemed necessary and appropriate.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); A minimum of two (2) years of job related work experience in a production facility performing metal and weld analysis Background in metallurgy strongly preferred Experience working in a manufacturing environment for an automotive OEM supplier a plus;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understanding of all required ASTM standards; Knowledge of chemical usage and safety; Ability to read and understand standardized work instructions and inspection sheets; Experience utilizing laser and plasma arc cutting equipment as well as various basic shop machinery such as bench and handheld grinders, cutters, etc. Ability to apply critical thinking and analytical skills to perform complex problem solving; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Ability to obtain hilo and crane certifications; Desire to work in a team-based, lean-manufacturing environment; Willingness to travel for training, and as other business needs may dictate; Ability and willingness to work any shift, as well as overtime, as required to meet business requirements;
