Position Summary Hartzell General Engineering Contractor, Inc. is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project Engineer to join our growing team. The Project Engineer will play a key role in supporting Project Managers and Superintendents throughout all phases of construction on public and private heavy civil infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills with a solid understanding of heavy civil construction practices. This position offers the opportunity to work on challenging projects involving underground utilities, grading, water treatment facilities, wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, reservoirs, and other complex infrastructure throughout California's Central Coast and surrounding counties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist Project Managers with all aspects of project administration and execution. Review contract documents, specifications, plans, and addenda to ensure compliance throughout construction. Prepare and track Requests for Information (RFIs), Submittals, Shop Drawings, and Material Procurement. Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, inspectors, and owners throughout project execution. Assist with project scheduling and monitor project milestones. Track procurement and long-lead material deliveries. Prepare and maintain project documentation, including daily reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, and project logs. Assist with quantity tracking, production reporting, and cost control. Support change order preparation, pricing, and documentation. Participate in project meetings and maintain communication with clients and design teams. Coordinate utility investigations and assist with field problem resolution. Support quality control and quality assurance efforts to ensure compliance with contract requirements. Assist with permit coordination and regulatory agency requirements. Maintain project records using construction management software. Perform occasional field visits to monitor construction progress and assist field personnel. Promote and maintain a safe working environment consistent with company safety policies. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred. Equivalent heavy civil construction experience may be considered. Minimum 2-5 years of experience in heavy civil construction preferred. Experience with public works construction is highly desirable. Understanding of civil construction methods, sequencing, and project administration. Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, and technical documents. Strong organizational and time management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook. Experience with Bluebeam, Procore, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or similar construction management software is preferred. Valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Preferred Experience Experience working on one or more of the following: Underground water, sewer, and storm drain utilities Water transmission and distribution pipelines Sewer collection systems Water treatment plants Wastewater treatment plants Pump stations Reinforced concrete structures Water storage reservoirs Earthwork and grading operations Shoring systems and excavation support Public works infrastructure projects Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality. Ability to solve construction-related challenges efficiently. Effective communication with field personnel, subcontractors, engineers, and owners. Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities. Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment. Commitment to safety and continuous improvement. Physical Requirements Ability to work in both office and field environments. Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites. Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Pay:
$100,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
