A Surveyor measures the surface of the Earth and collects data used to make maps, set boundaries, and determine the shape and contour of sections of land. Uses global positioning system (GPS) and global information system (GIS) technology to make measurements. May specialize in measurements to determine airspace boundaries; may conduct marine or hydrographic surveys to measure bodies of water and determine shorelines and water flow and depth.
Potomac Valley Surveys is a well-established land surveying and development consulting firm based in Poolesville, Maryland. We provide high-quality boundary, ALTA/NSPS, topographic, and construction surveying services, along with development consulting, to builders, developers, architects, and homeowners throughout Maryland. We are currently seeking a Full-Time Survey Crew Chief to join our growing team.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and mentor a survey crew in the field, ensuring high-quality work and professional development of team members Oversee and perform a variety of surveys including boundary, ALTA/NSPS, topographic, construction stakeout, and as-built surveys Operate and manage survey equipment (GPS, total stations, levels, drones, etc.) while maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency Collect, process, and verify field data, performing necessary calculations to meet project requirements Conduct quality control checks to ensure all work complies with project specifications, company standards, and state regulations Prioritize crew safety by leading daily safety meetings (Job Safety Analyses), identifying hazards, and enforcing safe work practices Maintain and calibrate survey equipment and company vehicles to ensure they are always in excellent working condition
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Proven experience as a Survey Crew Chief or senior surveyor with strong expertise in boundary, topographic, construction stakeout, and ALTA surveys Proficient in operating modern survey equipment including GPS/GNSS, total stations, digital levels, and data collectors Solid working knowledge of AutoCAD and Carlson software (or similar); experience with GIS, LiDAR, or photogrammetry is a plus Strong leadership and team mentoring skills with a demonstrated commitment to crew safety and quality control Ability to perform accurate field calculations, data processing, and basic report preparation Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and comfort operating vehicles on local job sites Familiarity with Maryland surveying standards and regulations is preferred
