Role:
The MTA Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of metropolitan transit systems across the United States. This position involves designing, maintaining, and optimizing the mechanical and electrical systems that support subway and bus operations. The engineer will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot issues, implement upgrades, and comply with regulatory standards. A key outcome of this role is to enhance transit system performance while prioritizing passenger safety and minimizing service disruptions. The MTA Engineer will also contribute to long-term infrastructure planning and innovation to meet evolving urban transportation needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in transportation engineering, preferably in public transit systems. Strong knowledge of transit vehicle systems, signaling, and infrastructure maintenance. Familiarity with safety regulations and standards applicable to metropolitan transit authorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional Engineer (PE) license, Registered Architect (RA), or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) in the state of New York. Master's degree in Engineering or Transportation Planning. Experience working with Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) systems or similar urban transit networks. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software and transit simulation tools. Knowledge of project management methodologies and experience leading engineering projects. Certification in safety management or transit operations (e.g., Certified Transit Safety and Security Officer).
Responsibilities:
Design, test, and maintain mechanical and electrical components of transit vehicles and infrastructure. Conduct regular inspections and diagnostics to identify and resolve system malfunctions or inefficiencies. Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to develop and implement engineering solutions. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations and safety standards. Prepare technical reports, documentation, and project proposals to support system improvements and upgrades. Participate in emergency response and troubleshooting to minimize service interruptions. Support capital projects by providing engineering expertise during planning, procurement, and construction phases.
