The Role The Senior Accounting Manager is a hands-on accounting manager responsible for the accurate, consistent, and timely execution of the company's accounting functions. Reporting to the CFO, this role manages daily accounting workflow, the accounting calendar, close processes, financial reporting, internal controls, bank activity, and weekly cash flow reporting. The position manages a team of three staff accountants and is accountable for assigning and reviewing work, maintaining reliable accounting records, identifying issues early, and improving accounting processes and documentation. The Senior Accounting Manager is expected to personally own and perform core accounting work, including close and financial statement preparation, while also reviewing and supervising staff work. The successful candidate combines strong technical accounting knowledge with the judgment and follow-through needed to manage the department's daily execution with limited supervision. Key Responsibilities Team and Department Management Manage daily accounting operations and the workflow of three staff accountants, including work assignments, priorities, and resolution of open items. Maintain the accounting calendar and ensure timely completion of close, year end, tax, audit, and other recurring deadlines. Review staff work, provide coaching and performance feedback, and ensure cross-training and backup coverage. Financial Reporting Close and Controls Prepare monthly financial statements, supporting schedules, and the management reporting package, ensuring results are accurate, complete, and ready for review. Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year end close, including the close calendar, staff assignments, journal entry review and posting, reconciliations, accruals, and cutoff. Review staff work, including journal entries, reconciliations, schedules, and account and variance analysis, and confirm it is accurate, complete, and supported before reporting is finalized. Review inventory reconciliations and adjustments, and coordinate with Operations to resolve discrepancies. Prepare or review payroll entries, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, bank reconciliations, and other assigned balance sheet areas. Maintain and improve accounting procedures, close checklists, internal controls, and documentation, and develop corrective plans for recurring issues. Cash Receivables and Reporting Own daily bank activity and outgoing cash controls, including bank review, oversight of payment runs, preparation of ACH and wire payment information for approval, and escalation of discrepancies or unusual transactions. Prepare and maintain weekly cash flow reporting and short-term forecasts, including cash position, expected receipts, planned disbursements, and liquidity needs. Oversee accounts receivable workflow and review staff work for accuracy, timeliness, and resolution of outstanding items. Support budget versus actual reporting and investigate variances where the underlying accounting activity requires review. Systems and Process Ownership Maintain the chart of accounts and general ledger master data. Oversee accounting system maintenance, data integrity, and consistent use of accounting processes. Support improvements to accounting systems, reporting, and processes. External Coordination Organize year-end and tax preparation, including workpapers, schedules, document requests, deadline tracking, and coordination with external tax and accounting professionals. Coordinate audit, lender, insurance, and compliance requests that depend on accounting records, ensuring complete and timely responses. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. Minimum seven years of progressive accounting experience, including monthly and year end close, financial statement preparation, journal entries, reconciliations, and recurring reporting. At least three years directly managing accounting staff, including assigning work, reviewing work, managing deadlines, and providing performance feedback. Proven ability to personally manage the close and prepare financial statements while supervising staff and reviewing their work. Strong understanding of inventory accounting, reconciliations, and cost of goods sold. Strong knowledge of GAAP, with the judgment to identify issues, investigate discrepancies, and know when to escalate. Strong understanding of accounts receivable and billing processes to effectively manage workflow and review staff work. Strong understanding of banking processes and payment controls, with the ability to prepare cash reports and short-term cash flow forecasts. Ability to maintain the chart of accounts and general ledger master data within an accounting system. Strong Excel skills and practical experience with ERP systems, general ledger reporting, and financial reporting tools. Comfortable learning new systems and using technology, automation, and AI tools responsibly to improve accounting accuracy, efficiency, and reporting. Strong organization, attention to detail, follow through, and the ability to manage competing priorities without losing sight of deadlines or open items.
