Washington, DC (Hybrid- 2 days/week onsite)
POSITION SUMMARY
The Staff Accountant supports all the accounting operations of the organization and plays a key role in managing financial transactions, ensuring accuracy in accounts receivable (AR) and accounts payable (AP), and assisting in month-end close processes. The role will contribute directly to CHCI's financial operations and annual audits. The Staff Accountant is an integral team player, in many instances, serving as a liaison and process support to all other departments within the organization. This position offers an excellent opportunity for growth in a mission-driven nonprofit organization.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Process and record accounting transactions related to Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR), including vendor bills and sponsor invoices Enter new vendors and sponsors into the financial management platform (currently com), ensuring all account records (e.g. ACH information, W-9, and contact information) are accurate Monitor and review AR aging schedules for discrepancies and follow up on outstanding sponsor accounts with balances exceeding 60/90/120 days Support the Accounting Manager with month-end close procedures, including: Weekly- invoicing, accounts receivable, AP review, and journal entry posting Monthly
- monthly close, general ledger account reconciliations (all assets and liabilities) Annually
- 1099s, audit schedules as assigned Work onsite at CHCI Headquarters two days per week to manage physical deposit of checks (at nearest bank location) and other tasks as needed Assist with periodic vendor account review through collaboration with other CHCI departments Collect audit samples and maintain organized records for the Accounting Manager's review Assist with revenue reconciliation and tracking of grant submissions Archive all invoice source documents for compliance and audit readiness Monitor the Finance department's shared mailbox and respond to critical sponsor inquiries.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists the Accounting Manager with administrative and finance duties as needed Assists with special projects, analysis and data gathering Complete compliance research specifically related to financial responsibilities at the state and local levelsQUALIFICATIONS
Required:
2-3 years of accounting experience preferred, but entry-level candidates with strong attention to detail are encouraged to apply Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines Excellent written and oral communication skills Must have the ability to work in-office twice per week at our headquarters Effective working in a collaborative, fast-paced nonprofit environment Commitment to the mission of theCongressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Proficiency with Microsoft 365, web-based platforms, and a CRM (preferably Salesforce) Familiarity with NetSuite, Bill.com and/or other accounting software is a plusBENEFITS CHCI
