Description:
The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing professional accounting duties in support of the financial operations of the DeSoto County Convention & Visitors Bureau (DCCVB), including the Landers Center, DeSoto County Convention Center, and other Bureau-managed operations. This position assists with maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, supporting the annual audit, monitoring internal controls, and ensuring compliance with Government Accounting Standards (GASB), governmental accounting standards, Bureau policies, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Staff Accountant works independently while collaborating closely with the Chief Executive Officer, department directors, external auditors, banking partners, and vendors. This position does not supervise employees but serves as an important resource for financial reporting, documentation, and operational compliance. In addition to accounting responsibilities, this position provides administrative support for Human Resources by coordinating employee onboarding, maintaining personnel records, supporting HRIS administration, and ensuring employment documentation is complete, accurate, and maintained in accordance with Bureau policies and applicable laws.Requirements:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, monthly financial statements, and supporting schedules.
- Reconcile bank, investment, and credit card accounts.
- Assist with annual budgets.
- Support annual audits by preparing schedules and responding to auditor requests.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
- Monitor cash management, treasury activities, ACH administration, and Positive Pay.
- Review purchasing documentation and ensure compliance with Bureau policies.
- Assist with grant reporting, construction accounting, and event settlement reconciliations.
- Maintain accounting records and recommend internal control improvements.
- Coordinate employee onboarding and maintain the Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
- Prepare and maintain personnel files, I-9s, W-4s, direct deposit forms, offer letters, and employment documentation.
- Maintain employee certifications, training records, organizational charts, and employment records.
- Coordinate onboarding activities including orientation, badges, and system access.
- Support payroll and benefits administration by maintaining accurate employee records.
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel records.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- Governmental, nonprofit, hospitality, or public-sector accounting experience preferred.
- Experience supporting annual audits and financial reporting preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIESS
- Knowledge of GAAP/GASB and strong accounting principles.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with HRIS and electronic personnel records preferred.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
