POSITION OVERVIEW
The Staff Accountant supports the Accounting Department by maintaining accurate financial records and learning key aspects of governmental accounting. This entry-level position is designed to provide hands-on experience in various financial functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, grants management, and financial reporting. The role offers structured training, mentorship, and exposure to multiple areas of the department to build a strong foundation for professional growth and future advancement within the organization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in preparing financial records, ledgers, and reports, supporting the overall accounting function Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including invoice matching and general ledger coding Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting activities Learn and apply Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) principles Assist with financial reporting, reconciliations, audits, and other accounting activities Support grants management activities including documentation and compliance tracking Participate in cross-training activities within the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable departments to effectively perform these tasks Receive training in financial systems, procedures, and governmental regulations Provide general department support, including handling inquiries and maintaining organized accounting files
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong interest in governmental finance and accounting,
- Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial systems
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) and familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
- Strong communication and willingness to learn through mentorship and collaboration within the Accounting Department
- Prior Accounting experience is preferred; exposure to governmental or nonprofit accounting practices is a plus Interest in maritime or transportation-related financial operations
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Associate's degree in Accounting required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or currently pursuing final year of study)
