Job Description
Controller — Accounting & Finance SUMMARY The Controller owns the accounting function end to end: monthly close, job cost accounting, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, and the internal controls that keep the numbers clean. This is a hands-on role in a project-driven construction business, and it sits at the intersection of accounting and operations. The Controller works side by side with project managers and the operations team to make sure job costs, commitments, change orders, and billings flow accurately between JobTread and QuickBooks. The right person is meticulous. In job cost accounting, a mis-mapped cost code or an unposted change order doesn't just create a reconciling item — it misstates margin on a live project and drives bad decisions in the field. We are looking for someone who catches those things before anyone else does.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Glencoe Advisors provides financial analysis and accounting support to a wide array of clients. We take an active role in the accounting and financial functions and identify and implement courses of action to assist companies through transition. We assist with capital raises and identify investment opportunities for our capital partners. As founders, we know the passion, creativity, and commitment it takes to give life to a brand. As operators, we know the key metrics that drive business success. As investors, we combine credit across all stages of growth with flexible terms and capital from our own balance sheet. This role supports a commercial specialty contractor within our portfolio.WHAT YOU'LL OWN
Close & Reporting- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including the job cost close, and deliver financial statements on a defined calendar
- Produce and maintain the WIP schedule — costs in excess of billings, billings in excess of costs, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
- Prepare job-level profitability reporting and margin fade analysis; surface variances to leadership and operations while there is still time to act on them
- Maintain internal books and records and a documented set of controls
- Coordinate with external auditors, the tax preparer, sureties, and lenders, including annual reviewed or audited financials and bonding requirements
Systems:
JobTread and QuickBooks- Own the integration between JobTread and QuickBooks — this is a core responsibility, not an occasional project
- Maintain the cost code structure and its mapping to the chart of accounts so field-level detail rolls up cleanly to the financials
- Reconcile the two systems on a regular cadence: customers and vendors, purchase orders and commitments, invoices, change orders, and payments
- Diagnose and resolve sync errors and data-integrity issues, and build the checks that catch them early
- Partner with the operations team to define and document how jobs are set up, budgeted, and updated in JobTread so the accounting output is right the first time
- Train PMs and admin staff on the workflows they touch, and hold the line on data discipline
- Use AI tools to take manual work out of the accounting function — reconciliation prep, variance narratives, document review, and process documentation — with appropriate review before anything touches the books Operations & Cash
- Manage progress billing and AIA-style pay applications, retainage tracking, and lien waiver compliance
- Oversee AR collections and AP, including subcontractor compliance: W-9s, certificates of insurance, and 1099 reporting
- Manage cash flow forecasting, working capital, and borrowing base or line of credit reporting
- Own the annual budget process and rolling forecasts of P&L and operating performance
- Oversee payroll accounting, including certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting where applicable
- Manage sales and use tax, business licensing, and other regulatory filings
- Develop and monitor the operating metrics that leadership and PMs actually use
REQUIREMENTS
- 5-7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including time as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accountant ready to step up
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
- Construction or project-based accounting experience: WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion, job costing, retainage, and change order accounting
- Advanced QuickBooks (Online or Desktop), including chart of accounts design and class/job tracking
- Hands-on experience integrating or administering a construction management platform — JobTread, Procore, Buildertrend, Sage, or similar — and reconciling it to the general ledger
- Exceptional attention to detail and a habit of reconciling to the penny, paired with the judgment to know what actually matters
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, model maintenance)
- AI fluency.
- Ability to communicate clearly with people who are not accountants: project managers, field leadership, and owners
- Comfortable in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment; strong organizational skills and the ability to run multiple priorities at once
NICE TO HAVE
- CPA•Experience implementing or converting accounting or project management systems•Experience with surety bonding and bank reporting requirements•Experience building AI-assisted workflows or automations — Claude Projects, custom instructions, connected tools, or scripting against an API — to handle recurring accounting and reporting tasks
