An Accountant organizes and maintains financial records and prepares financial statements for companies and organizations. Works as a public accountant (prepares financial documents where public disclosure is required by law, such as business balance sheets and tax returns), management accountant (prepares financial information for internal use by a company) or government accountant (maintains records for government agencies).
About Us Atlanta Propane Exchange is a growing propane business serving customers across the Southeast. Our cylinder exchange operation supplies forklift, industrial, agricultural, and commercial customers from multiple locations, and we are building a bulk propane delivery service for residential and commercial customers alongside it. We are investing in a modern, professional back office to support that growth. It is an unique moment to join: the systems, the processes, and the team are all being built right now, and the person in this role will help build them. About the Role We are looking for an organized, detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join a small, hands-on accounting team. Because the company is still lean, this person will do a little of everything — which is the fastest way to learn the entire back-office process end to end. As we grow and dedicated payroll, HR, and accounts payable roles are added, there will be real opportunity to move into a leadership role or to specialize. In the near term, this is a "do-everything" role owning day-to-day transactional accounting across multiple locations and supporting an accurate, timely monthly close. You will report to the Chief Financial Officer and work closely with the administrative teams at each location. What You'll Do Accounts Payable & Disbursements Receive, verify, code, and record all vendor invoices — propane purchases, fleet, facilities, insurance, and other operating costs. Initiate company disbursements in a timely manner via ACH and check. Serve as the point person for vendor inquiries and discrepancies. Set up new vendors and maintain vendor profiles, ensuring W-9s are on file and payment details are current. Manage and reconcile company credit-card and fuel-card accounts. Obtain proper approvals and ensure all charges are coded to the correct general-ledger accounts. Close & Reconciliations Perform bank and credit-card reconciliations. Record journal entries and maintain accrual, prepaid, and depreciation / amortization schedules. Prepare inventory calculations and support revenue recognition and accounts-receivable reconciliation. Reconcile the AP ledger and ensure items are posted in the proper accounting period. Payroll & Labor Run the bi-weekly payroll with our payroll provider and prepare the information needed for each run. Help issue new-hire onboarding paperwork and benefits enrollment. Prepare labor allocation and payroll accruals. Assist with 401(k) administration paperwork. Tax & Compliance Filings Prepare and submit sales & use tax returns. Prepare annual personal property tax returns. Complete business and tax registrations as needed. Complete annual 1099 filings and other tax forms as needed. Reporting & Audit Support Support the CFO with the monthly reporting packet and variance analysis. Provide year-end support for the accounting and insurance audits. What We're Looking For Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration preferred. 2-4 years of accounting experience covering accounts payable, general ledger, and reconciliations; multi-entity or multi-location experience a plus. Microsoft Office experience with intermediate Excel skills. QuickBooks and ADP experience is a plus. Comfortable adapting to and learning new systems and supporting system implementations, rather than deep expertise in any single package. Working knowledge of GAAP and accrual accounting; sales & use tax exposure a plus. Experience using AI tools to make data analysis and processes more efficient and accurate is a plus. Who Thrives Here Strong data-entry skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Good written and verbal communication skills. Adaptable and eager to learn the entire back office and grow with the company. Highly organized, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a lean, fast-moving environment. Able to maintain confidentiality and objectivity. Compensation & Benefits Full-time, Monday through Friday. On-site in the Atlanta east side area preferred; we would consider a hybrid schedule for the right candidate. Health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with company match; paid time off. Atlanta Propane Exchange is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to any characteristic protected by applicable law.
