POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. . The Staff Accountant maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and coordinates intermediate level accounting functions such as general ledger/account maintenance, account reconciliation, data processing and reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs daily cash management, monthly bank reconciliation, and maintenance of recurring journal entries; reviews and prepares non-recurring journal entries.
  • Reconciles assigned general ledger accounts, including but not limited to, bank/credit drafts.
  • Processes returned checks and drafts in the accounting system.
  • Receives grants and income and prepares the deposit and cash report.
  • Processes office petty cash and replenishes account as needed.
  • Organizes resources and deliverables to best meet intended goals and outcomes.
  • Prepares and analyzes the monthly financial statements in relationship to the budget, prior year, and strategic plan. Assists with the analysis financial statements.
  • May serve as liaison for the day-to-day banking activities.
  • Assists with month end and year end closings.
  • Completes a variety of accounting, financial analysis, and budget projects.
  • Reconciles bank statements and writes up journal entries.
  • Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred, or Associate's degree in accounting or related field plus at least one year of accounting experience (or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, journal entries, and core accounting functions.
  • Experience with month-end close processes and financial reporting.
  • Familiarity with budgeting processes
  • Proficiency with computerized accounting systems and advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including spreadsheets, formulas, and data analysis; working knowledge of word processing software required.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and assume increased responsibilities as organizational needs evolve.
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED training through the American Red Cross is required for all employees of the YMCA of Greater Michiana.
This training will be provided at no cost.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Pay:
$43,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
