POSITION SUMMARY
This
FULL-TIME SR.
Accountant position is located in Newport News, VA, and pays $48.00 per hour. This role provides accounting support to the City of Newport News Human Services Department, responsible for the administration and oversight of accounting work involving research, analysis, preparation, and maintenance of financial records and reports. The Sr. Accountant will supervise one or more departmental fiscal functions, such as Procurement & Vendor Management, Expenditure & Encumbrance Management, or Revenue & Reporting Management and will support training and development, performance management, employee relations, and task assignment for staff. Additional job duties may be assigned as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise one or more departmental fiscal functions, which may include Procurement & Vendor Management, Expenditure & Encumbrance Management, or Revenue & Reporting Management. Provide training and development, performance management, and employee relations support for assigned staff. Assign and oversee tasks for staff within supervised fiscal functions. Maintain a working knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including those specific to human services programs. Prepare accurate, timely financial reports, records, and documentation in accordance with departmental standards. Support the department's procurement, expenditure, encumbrance, and revenue reporting processes. Communicate effectively with department leadership, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure efficient fiscal operations. Perform other related duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
Knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and standards, including research, analysis, and financial reporting. Knowledge of human services accounting principles and practices preferred. Strong supervisory skills, including training and development, performance management, and employee relations. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple fiscal functions and meet deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear reports and documentation. Ability to work independently while collaborating with department leadership and staff. Ability to safely operate a city vehicle as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Management, Finance, or a related field required, with coursework equivalent to a major concentration in accounting. 3-5 years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 1-2 years of supervisory experience required. Knowledge of human services accounting principles and practices preferred. Valid driver's license required (Non-CDL).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week. Prolonged periods of sitting for documentation, analysis, and administrative tasks. Ability to safely operate a city vehicle as needed. Must have a clean driving record. Ability to lift and carry materials or files as needed.
