Job Description

ABOUT JOHN BOOS & CO. AND J.K. ADAMS JK
Adams Co., based in Dorset, Vermont since 1944, is a heritage American woodworking company specializing in cutting boards, serving boards, and kitchen accessories. John Boos & Co. has been crafting premium wood and stainless-steel kitchen equipment in Effingham, Illinois for nearly 140 years, serving foodservice, industrial, and consumer/retail markets. The two companies recently joined forces, creating a combined American-made woodworking and foodservice platform with shared scale, expanded resources, and deep wood-products manufacturing capability.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Responsible for the cost accounting function at J.K. Adams' Dorset, Vermont manufacturing operation. Owns inventory valuation and product costing, cost of goods sold (COGS), and manufacturing variance analysis, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of inventory and COGS on the books. Partners with Operations, Production, and Purchasing to maintain accurate bills of material, work-order costing, and labor and overhead absorption, and works closely with the Controller on month-end close, inventory-to-GL reconciliation, and internal controls. This role is newly defined to consolidate the cost and inventory accounting responsibilities essential to a make-to-stock woodworking operation. Reports to the Controller and is on-site at the Dorset, VT facility.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain inventory valuation and product costing (standard and/or average), including the periodic cost roll and review of cost changes by item and product line. Reconcile the inventory subledger to the general ledger each month; investigate and resolve variances and document the reconciliation process. Calculate, post, and analyze cost of goods sold (COGS); tie COGS to production activity and sales by channel (wholesale, retail, and online). Account for manufacturing and work-in-process (WIP), including labor and overhead absorption; review work orders and bills of material (BOMs) for cost accuracy. Analyze manufacturing variances (material, labor, overhead, scrap, and yield) at the work-center level; partner with the Production Supervisor and Operations to identify root causes and corrective actions. Support the monthly close for all inventory and cost-related accounts — journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations — in partnership with the Controller. Maintain BOM and work-order cost data in the ERP (Sage); support BOM setup and updates as items shift across processes such as CNC routing, laser, and finishing. Reconcile receiving, clearing, and inventory adjustment accounts; support the three-way match (PO / receipt / invoice) tie-out with Accounts Payable. Coordinate and reconcile cycle counts and periodic physical inventories; review and approve inventory adjustments, scrap, and write-downs per policy. Maintain the obsolete and slow-moving inventory reserve; recommend reserve levels based on usage and aging. Prepare inventory and cost reporting — inventory value reports and gross-margin analysis by product and channel — for management and the Controller. Support internal controls over inventory and costing, year-end audit schedules, and the external CPA's year-end package. 2027 Goal is to shift from job costing to standards costing
EDUCATION & TRAINING
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience). CPA, CMA, or progress toward certification a plus.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
3+ years of accounting experience, preferably including cost or inventory accounting in a manufacturing environment. Working knowledge of standard and/or average costing, COGS, and manufacturing variance analysis. Experience with inventory valuation, BOMs, work orders, and WIP / labor and overhead absorption. Experience reconciling inventory subledgers to the general ledger and supporting month-end close. Familiarity with ERP systems (Sage or similar); exposure to wood products, furniture, or discrete manufacturing a plus.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to investigate variances and clearly explain cost drivers. Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, and modeling); proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office. High attention to detail and accuracy, with strong organizational and documentation habits. Solid understanding of GAAP as it relates to inventory, costing, and revenue recognition. Ability to partner across Operations, Production, Purchasing, and Finance to gather data and drive accuracy. Excellent verbal and written communication.
