Job Description

Position Summary The Staff Accountant is responsible for independently performing professional accounting work including account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, financial analysis, month-end close activities, financial reporting, and audit support. This position requires the ability to analyze financial transactions, identify accounting issues, determine appropriate accounting treatment, and complete assignments accurately with minimal supervision. GENERAL DUTIES/KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare, analyze, and maintain general ledger accounts and supporting schedules. Perform monthly account reconciliations and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner. Prepare and post accurate journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation. Complete assigned month-end and year-end closing activities within established deadlines. Prepare audit schedules, supporting workpapers, and responses to auditor requests. Prepare financial analyses, budget worksheets, forecasts, and variance reports. Research, identify, and correct accounting discrepancies and out-of-balance conditions. Assist in preparation of internal and external financial reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting. Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience that included preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, month-end close activities, and financial statement support. Experience preparing journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and maintaining general ledger accounts. Experience participating in month-end and year-end close processes. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, and data analysis. Demonstrated ability to analyze financial transactions and determine appropriate accounting treatment. Demonstrated understanding of accrual accounting principles and financial statement relationships. Ability to prepare accurate and complete workpapers and supporting documentation. Ability to identify, investigate, and resolve accounting discrepancies. Preferred Qualifications Utility, governmental, municipal, or public-sector accounting experience. Experience supporting annual external audits. Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and regulatory reporting. Experience with ERP systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Successful performance in this position requires the employee to: Independently perform professional accounting work with minimal supervision. Prepare accurate journal entries and account reconciliations. Analyze accounting issues and determine appropriate accounting treatment for routine and moderately complex transactions. Maintain accurate and complete accounting records and audit trails. Prepare financial reports and supporting schedules. Identify errors, discrepancies, and unusual transactions and take appropriate corrective action. Meet established month-end, year-end, reporting, and compliance deadlines. Effectively communicate accounting issues and recommendations to management. Maintain confidentiality of financial, personnel, and customer information. Perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

WORK SCHEDULE AND LOCATION
This is a full-time position requiring a regular work schedule of forty (40) hours per week. Regular on-site attendance at Vera Water and Power's office is required during normal business hours. This position is not eligible for remote work.
